Solution of Example (1) Using Shooting Method

The present proposed technique is suitable to

analyze the thermal network of some 22 o C
unconventional heat transfer problems. The
temperatures at the two boundaries of the
network are known(T ∞ 1∧T ∞ 2), and one or Iced water
more of the thermal resistances are unknown
(e.g. the thermal resistance of radiation
through evacuated space). According to the 0 oC
h1 h2
present technique, the temperature difference
across each thermal resistance is calculated,
starting with the value of temperature at the
left boundary (T ∞ 1 ¿ . As a result of the forgoing
step, the value of the temperature at the right R rad
boundary is obtained. This value is not T Ri T1 R1 T
1 2 T 2
necessary to be the true value of temperature,
but it is a function of the assumed value of the Ro
rate of heat transfer, as:

T ∞ 2 ,cal =F ( Q̇) (1)

And then, one can write;

T ∞ 2−F ( Q̇ ) =f ( Q̇ )=0 (2)

Where (T ∞ 2 ,cal ¿ denotes the calculated temperature at the right boundary and Q̇ is
the rate of heat transfer. Equation (1) and equation (2) can be, graphically, solved by
draw F(Q̇ ¿ versus Q̇ ; and f(Q̇ ) versus Q̇ .

Referring to the thermal network of the problem, the solution is carried out through
the following steps:

Steps of solution

1. Assume a value of rate of heat transfer (Q˙ ¿ ¿.

2. Calculate the value of T ∞ 2 ,cal =F ( Q̇ ), according to the given thermal network of
the problem, for present problem, as:
T 1=T ∞ 1+ Q̇ × R i

T 2=T 1 + Q̇ × R 1

1
hrad =εσ ( T 22 +T 2∞ 2 ) ×( T 2 +T ∞ 2)

And accordingly, the thermal resistance of radiation is given by:

1
Rrad =
A2 hrad

1 1 1
= +
R ¿ Rrad Ro

R rad × R o
R¿ =
Rrad + R o

T ∞ 2 ,cal =T 2 + Q̇ × R¿ =F ( Q̇ )

T ∞ 2−F ( Q̇ ) =f ( Q̇ )

3. Steps 1, 2 and 3 are repeated, then draw F ( Q̇ ) versus Q̇ and f ( Q̇ ) versus Q̇

and then the solution is at F ( Q̇ ) =T ∞ 2 and at f ( Q̇ ) =0; respectively, as shown in
figure.
