laboratory.

QUESTION 3.

(i) Define isomers. Write the various isomers of pentane. Write both molecular as well as
structural formula [Common and IUPAC names both]. [2]

(ii) Name the gas in each of the following : [2]


(a) A gas which turns acidified potassium dichromate clear green.
(b) The gas produced on reaction of dilute sulphuric acid with a metallic sulphide.

(iii) The following table represent the elements and the atomic number. [3]

(b) A nitrate which on heating leaves no residue behind.

(i) Answer the following questions : [2]


(a) Name the process used for the enrichment of sulphide ore.
(b) Write the chemical formulae of one main ore of iron and aluminium.

(ii) A gaseous hydrocarbon contains 82.76% of carbon. Given that its vapour density is 29, find
its molecular formula. [C = 12, H = 1] [2]

(iii) How will you demonstrate the solubility of ammonia in water ? Explain. [3]

(iv) In the laboratory preparation of hydrochloric acid, HCl gas is dissolved in water. [3]
(a) Draw a diagram to show the arrangement used for the absorption of HCl in water.

(b) Calcium carbide to ethyne.

(iii) (a) When nitric acid is prepared by the action of concentrated sulphuric acid on potassium
nitrate, what is the special feature of the apparatus used? [4]
(b) Write the equation for the laboratory preparation of nitric acid from potassium nitrate
and concentrated sulphuric acid.
(c) Potassium nitrate is prepared from potassium hydroxide and nitric acid. Name the type
of this reaction.
(d) Which gas is produced when potassium nitrate is heated ? Write the equation for the
reaction.

QUESTION 8.

(i) State one relevant observation for the following reaction : [2]
Addition of excess ammonium hydroxide into copper sulphate solution.

(ii) Writ down the difference between sodium atom and sodium ion. [2]

(iii) Explain the following : [3]


(a) In the manufacture of sulphuric acid by the Contact Process, great care is taken to purify
the mixture of air and sulphur dioxide, especially to free it from arsenic impurities.
(b) Whenever water is added to concentrated sulphuric acid or concentrated sulphuric acid
is added to water, a large amount of heat is liberated. But the acid dangerously spurts
out only when water is added to the concentrated acid.

(iv) Choose the correct word which refers to the process of electrolysis from P to R, to match
the description 1 to 3. [3]
