Context, Hypertext, and Intertext

I. MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

The most essential Learning Objective/Competency is to identify the context in which a text was
developed.
a. Hypertext
b. Intertext
II. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the learner should be able to:
1. define context;
2. determine ways on how a text is developed;
3. define hypertext; and
4. define intertext
III. INTRODUCTION
Do you think that an author‟s personal background, as well as the environment in which he/she
lived in, influences his/her writings? If so, can you cite some authors and the proof in their work? An
example is done for you. You can add two.

Author Work Proof

Jose P. Rizal Noli Me Tangere He described Spanish-era Philippines, from the
architecture to the culture, even though he used
fictional characters.

Context
There is always an inspiration behind the writing of a text, and often, it leaves clues about the
situation or the reality that served as the backdrop of the text. This backdrop is known as the context of
the text.
When you consider context as you write things, be guided by the following reminders:
 If you are writing academically-these, journal articles, historical narratives, expository essays,
argumentative essays, position papers, etc. - you need to stick to the facts. Portray the reality as
it is. To do so, you must conduct extensive research using scholarly references.
 When using context, try to represent several perspectives by citing different sources.
 If you are writing fiction, and aim to integrate your context into it, remember to not make the
tale too far off from human and worldly reality. Works like Harry Potter, the Lord of the
Rings, and Ibong Adarna, while they are fictional, have a lot of the human touch in them-
making them relevant to audiences.

Text Development
There are several ways by which a text is developed. You learned in the previous about the
forms of essays: descriptive, expository, and argumentative. In this lesson, you will learn about the
other forms that fall under expository texts.

2
Each form has its own way of developing the text, but here are the essentials that you need
to remember:
 Purpose. It must have an aim or an objective. You need to know the reason why
you are writing the text, and what you intended to achieve from your readers- to
make them laugh, to convince them to take action, to let them understand
something, or to educate them, among others.

 Audience. Do not forget to know your target audience. Is your text for the youth?
Is it for adults? Is it for experts? Is it for novices? Remember that you cannot
always resonate to every single person in the world; you need to focus on a target
audience. In this manner, you will be able to adjust the content, your use of
language, and your style of presentation.

 Content and meaning. Your work need to have substance. Apart from being
considerate of your target audience, what will make them read the work is its
content and meaning. You will have substance if your text speaks the truth, if it
talks about a topic that is relevant or timely, and if you use credible sources whom
you cite properly. Meaning will likewise be enhanced if you can explain or present
this content in a manner understandable to your audience. Therefore, if you will
use jargon or highly specialized language that can be understood only by a group
of people, make sure that it is a jargon understandable to that audience. For
example, your target audience are medical doctors; use medical language.
However, if you are talking to patients, use language that patients will understand.

Hypertext
This is simply a non-linear way of presenting information, rather than the traditional linear
process of reading from beginning to end. Readers of hypertext may follow their own path, create
their own meaning out of the materials that connect topics on a screen to related information,
graphics, videos, and music-the information is not simply related to text. It is a way of providing
clickable links to other sections of a document, or other documents on the internet. It is the basis of
what we know as the world wide web.
How can we identify hypertext? This information appears as links and is usually accessed
by clicking and shifting to different web pages in a matter of second and minute. The reader can
navigate around the internet and jump to more information about a topic which in turn may have
more links that open up the reader to a widen horizon of information or ton new direction.
One of the recent developments in reading has been brought about by the advancement of
technology. Let‟s take a look at the technological advancements that you are familiar with. Encircle
them.

Tablet desktop computer

Laptop smartphone

Perhaps you encircled most of these. If you read texts using these gadgets, you may have
noticed that some web pages have texts that have hyperlinks (normally underlined in blue color).
What makes hypertext unique is the speed at which you can go to different texts. When the
first texts mentions a concept that is also discussed in another text, all you need to do is click on the
hyperlink and another page will load.

3
What happens when we go to different texts?
When you get to navigate around the internet and view several web pages in a matter of
seconds or minutes, you have a greater chance of getting a better picture of an entire scenario in a
fast manner.
There are now so many news websites and applications that are accessible via the internet.
Often, when you read a news article – especially one of that belongs to a series- you see hyperlinks
that will bring you to other related news stories. This helps the reader get a better understanding of
the whole story.
Always remember that true comprehension is being able to understand the whole picture.

Intertext
Intertextuality is the interconnection between similar or related works of literature in terms
of language, images, characters, themes or subjects depending on their similarities in language,
genre, or discourse, that reflects and influences an audience‟s interpretation of the text.
Intertextualities is the relation between texts that are inflicted by means of quotations and allusions.

 We can widen our knowledge. Reading more leads to knowing more, and that can help
broaden what you know about the topic.

 We can view different texts and different perspectives. Referring to different texts and
authors helps you give other perspectives about the same topic, preventing you from having
a fundamentalist view of things.

 We can be more certain of what we know. Finding out that your ideas match the ideas of
previous authors helps validate the things you know. It makes the information credible.

Examples of inter text are as follows:

A. The song Spolarium by Eraserhead makes intertextuality with the concept of the painting,
“Spolarium” by Juan Luna.

When you listen to the song, the first thing that you would ask would be, “Why was entitled,
„Spolarium‟? You will attempt to research Spolarium and eventually find Juan Luna‟s
Spolarium.

B. Tailor Swift‟s song, “Love Story” makes intertextuality reference to Romeo and Juliet.
“Cause you were Romeo, I was a scarlet letter and my daddy said stay away from Juliet.”
