AGRICULTURAL AND FOOD ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

lIT KHARAGPUR

Mid-Autumn Semester Examination 2016-2017

3nl Year B. Tech. (Hons.) & Dual Degree Students

Max. Marks: 40
Date of Exam: 15-09-2016 (AN)
Time: 2 h
Subject No.: AG31007
Subject Name: Theory and Design of Machine Elements
No. of Students: 47
Instructions: 1. Answer all the questions.
2. Make justified assumptions wherever necessary.

1. Write short notes on the following: [5Xl=5]

(i) Slider crank chain second inversion
(ii) Double slider crank chain third inversion
(iii) Mechanical advantage of a mechanism
(iv) Effect of slip and belt thickness on velocity ratio of belt drive
(v) Velocity ratio of compound belt drive

2. A double four-link mechanism is shown in Fig. 1; A, D and G are pivot points on fixed disc
and there are two four-bar linkages 'ABeD' and 'DEFG'. Find the instantaneous angular
velocity of the link EFH, when the crank AB rotates at an angular speed of 60 rpm in counter
clockwise direction, and D, C, E and H lie on a horizontal line. Use graphical method. [10]

3. A kinematic linkage 'A-BCE-D' is shown in Fig. 2. 'AD' link is fixed and crank 'AB'
rotates in clock-wise at 40 rad/s uniform speed. Find the instantaneous accelerations of points
'B', 'C' and 'E' using graphical method. [15]

In an open belt drive as shown in Fig. 3, a single open belt wraps all the pulleys 'A', 'B' and
4. 'C'; determine the length of the belt required to wrap the pulleys. [10]
