Square Root of a Perfect Square by the Prime Factorisation Method

When a given number is a perfect square, we find its square root by the following steps:
Step 1. Resolve the given number into prime factors.
Step 2. Make pairs of similar factors.
Step 3. Take the product of the prime factors, choosing onefactor out of every pair.

f the capacityof the auditorium is 2025, find the number of chairs in each row.
Solution Let the number of chairs in each row be x. 5 2025
Then, the number of rows = x. 5 405
Total number of chairs in the auditorium =(xxx) =x. 3 81
3 27
But, the capacity of the auditorium = 2025 (given). 3 9
x = 2025 3 3
=5x5x 3x3 ×3x3
’ X= (5 x 3x3) = 45.
Hence, the number of chairs in each row = 45.
EXAMPLE 6. Findthe smallest number by which 396 must he multiplied so that the product
becomes a perfect square.
Solution By prime factorisation, we get 2396
396 = 2x2x3x3 x11. 2198
3 99
It is clear that in order to get a perfect square, one more 11 is required. 3 33
So, the given number should be multiplied by 11 to make the product a
1
perfect square.
EXAMPLE 7. Find the least square number divisible bu each one of 8, 9 and 10.
Solution The least number divisible by each one of 8. 9, 10 is their LCM. 28. 9, 10
4. 9, 5
Now, LCM of 8, 9, 10 = (2 x 4x9x5) =360.
By prime factorisation, we get 2360
2 180
360 = 2 x2× 2x3 x3x5 2 90
3 45
To make it a perfect square it must be multiplied by (2 x5), i.e., 10. 3 15
5 5
Hence, required number= (360 x10) = 3600.

So. the least number to be
subtracted from 7250 is 25.
Required perfect square number = (7250 - 25)= 7225.
And. 7225 = 85.
