REFRACTION OF LIGHT
1 Mark Questions

1. Refraction causes due to

(a) change in wavelength of light
(b) change in frequency of light
(c) change in speed of light
(d) Both (a) and (c)

2. The speed of light in water is 2.25 × 10⁸ m/s, then refractive index of water is
(a) 2.32
(b) 1.03
(c) 1.33
(d) 2.33

3. When angle of incidence and angle of emergence are equal, then angle of deviation is
(a) minimum
(b) maximum
(c) zero
(d) equal

4. A ray of light suffers refraction through an equilateral prism. The deviation produced by
prism does not depend on the
(a) angle of incidence
(b) colour of light
(c) material of prism
(d) size of prism

5. In total internal reflection

(a) angle of incidence is not equal to critical angle.
(b) angle of incidence is greater than the critical angle.
(c) angle of incidence is less than the critical angle.
(d) angle of incidence is equal to critical angle.

2 Marks Questions

6. What do you understand by refraction of light?

7. How is refractive index of a medium related to the speed of light in it?
8. Draw a ray diagram to show the refraction of a monochromatic ray through a prism when it
suffers minimum deviation.
9. State the condition required for total internal refraction of light to take place.
10. A water pond appears to be 2.7 m deep. If the refractive index of water is 4/3. Find the
actual depth of the pond.

3 Marks Questions

11. (i) What is lateral displacement? Draw a ray diagram showing the lateral displacement of
a ray of light when it passes through a parallel sided glass slab.
(ii) A coin at the bottom of a trough containing water to a depth of 15 cm appears to be 3.75
cm raised above from the bottom. Calculate the refractive index of water.
(iii) A ray of light strikes the surface at a rectangular glass slab such that the angle of
incidence is (i) 20°, (ii) 45°. In each case, draw diagram to show the path taken by the ray as
it passes through the glass slab and emerges from it.

12. (i) Copy the diagram given below and complete the path of light ray till it emerges out of
the prism. The critical angle of glass is 42°. In your diagram mark the angles wherever
necessary.

(ii) Light passes through a rectangular glass slab and through a triangular glass prism. In what
way does the direction of two emergent beams differ and why?
(iii) Draw diagram to show the refraction of light from (i) air to glass, (ii) glass to air. In each
diagram, label the incident ray, refracted ray, the angle of incidence (i) and the angle
of refraction (r).
