11. (i) What is lateral displacement? Draw a ray diagram showing the lateral displacement of
a ray of light when it passes through a parallel sided glass slab.
(ii) A coin at the bottom of a trough containing water to a depth of 15 cm appears to be 3.75
cm raised above from the bottom. Calculate the refractive index of water.
(iii) A ray of light strikes the surface at a rectangular glass slab such that the angle of
incidence is (i) 20°, (ii) 45°. In each case, draw diagram to show the path taken by the ray as
it passes through the glass slab and emerges from it.
12. (i) Copy the diagram given below and complete the path of light ray till it emerges out of
the prism. The critical angle of glass is 42°. In your diagram mark the angles wherever
necessary.
(ii) Light passes through a rectangular glass slab and through a triangular glass prism. In what
way does the direction of two emergent beams differ and why?
(iii) Draw diagram to show the refraction of light from (i) air to glass, (ii) glass to air. In each
diagram, label the incident ray, refracted ray, the angle of incidence (i) and the angle
of refraction (r).
