TOPIC: PROBABILITY DISTRIBUTION

CLASS – 12
PREPARED BY – MR. MANOJ KUMAR SHARMA
1. A random variable X has the following probability distribution:
X -2 -1 0 1 2 3
P(X) 0.1 k 0.2 2k 0.3 k
(i) Find the value of k
(ii) Find mean of X
(iii) Find variance of X.

2. A pair of dice is thrown 4 times. If getting a doublet is considered a success, find

the probability distribution of number of successes.

3. Let X denote the number of colleges where you will apply after your results and
P(X=x) denotes your probability of getting admission in x number of colleges. It
is given that:
kx if x = 0 or 1

P( X = x) = 2kx if x = 2 k is a positive integer.
5(5 − x) if x = 3 or 4

(i) Find the value of k
(ii) What is the probability that you will get admission in exactly 2 colleges?
(iii) Find the mean and variance of the probability distribution.

4. Find the probability distribution of the number of white balls drawn in a random
draw of 3 balls without replacement from a bag containing 4 white and 6 red
balls. Also find the mean and variance of the distribution.

5. A fair die is tossed twice. If the number appearing on the top is less than 3, it is
a success. Find the probability distribution of number of successes.

6. Two cards are drawn successively with replacement from a pack of 52 cards.
Find the mean and variance of the number of kings.

7. A coin is tossed 4 times. Let X denote the number of heads. Find the mean and
variance of X.

8. 3 defective bulbs are mixed with 7 good ones. Let X be the number of defective
bulbs when 3 bulbs are drawn at random. Find the mean and variance of X.

9. A pair of dice is thrown 4 times. If getting a doublet is considered a success.

Find the mean and variance of number of successes.

10. Two cards are drawn simultaneously from a well packed deck of 52 cards. Find
the mean and standard deviation of the number of the kings.

11. A random variables X has the following probability distribution : Find
X 0 1 2 3 4
P(X) 0 k 2k 2k 3k
(i) k
(ii) P( X  4)
(iii) P( X  2)
(iv) P( X  2)
(v) Mean
(vi) Variance

12. A random variable X has the following probability distribution.

X 0 1 2 3 4 5
P(X) 1 15k − 2 15k − 1 1
15 k 15 k 15 15
Find the value of k .
Hence find the mean and variance of the distribution.

13. A random variable X, taking values 0, 1, 2 has the following probability

distribution for some number k .
k if X = 0

P( X ) = 2k if X = 1, find k .
3k if X = 2

14. Two cards are drawn from a pack of well shuffled 52 cards one by one with
replacement. Getting an ace or a spade is considered a success. Find probability
distribution of number of successes.

15. Write the probability distribution for the number of heads obtained when three
coins are tossed together. Also, find the mean and variance of the number of
heads.

16. Two cards are drawn simultaneously (or successively without replacement) from
a well-shuffled pack of 52 cards. Find the mean and variance of the number of
red cards.

17. A random variable X has the following probability distribution: Find

X 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7
P(X) 0 k 2k 2k 3k k 2
2k 2
7k + k
2

(i) k
(ii) P( X  3)
(iii) P( X  6)
(iv) P(0  X  3)
18. From past experience, a company has found that in carton of transistors, 92%
contain no defective transistors, 3% contain one defective transistor, 3% contain
two defective transistors, and 2% contain three defective transistors.
(a) Construct a probability distribution of number of defective transistors.
(b) Calculate the mean, variance and standard deviation for the defective
transistors.
