INTRODUCTION:
In the modern world where computers facilitate almost every aspect of work
or production, everyone needs to have at least basic competence in operating a
computer. This course is designed to provide learners basic knowledge of
computers and the integrated components of a computer system. By the end of the
course, learners are expected to have a working knowledge of the functions and
applications of the various computer hardware.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:
At the end of the lesson, you should be able to:
• Define computer system
• Understand the basic components of a computer system
• Use a personal computer system.

LESSON PROPER:

Computer System
What is a Computer?
- is an electronic machine that acknowledges
information (input), stores, and forms
information into data (yield). The computer can
work because there are instructions in its
memory, directing it. The parts of the
computer, such as the keyboard, monitor, and mouse, are called
hardware. Taken From https://www.vectorstock.com/

BASIC PARTS OF A COMPUTER SYSTEM

Computer components consist of HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE on any computers.

According to (en.Wikipedia.org), Computer hardware is the collection of physical

elements that constitutes a computer system.

Computer hardware refers to the physical parts or components of a computer such

as a monitor, mouse, keyboard, computer data storage, hard drive disk (HDD),
system unit (graphic cards, sound cards, memory, motherboard, and chips), etc. all
of which are physical objects that can be touched.

COMPONENTS OF A PERSONAL COMPUTER

1. System Case: The system case or System Unit, now and then called the chassis or
walled in area, is the metal and plastic box that houses the most components of the
computer.
2. Monitor - Your monitor is the component that displays the visual output from your
computer as generated by the video card.
3. Keyboard - This is the input device to enter the text data into the computer. 4.
Mouse - A point and press interface for entering commands which work well in
graphical situations.

INPUT DEVICES
An input device is any fringe (a piece of computer equipment hardware to supply
information and control signals to a data handling framework such as a computer or
other data apparatus.
Input device Translate data from a form that humans understand to one that the
computer can work with. The foremost common is console and mouse.

EXAMPLE OF INPUT
DEVICES: 1. Keyboard
2. Mouse (pointing
device) 3. Microphone
4. Touch screen
5. Scanner
6. Webcam
7. Touch-pads

Instrument Digital
Interface) keyboard

A FEW OF THE YIELD GADGETS ARE VISUAL SHOW
UNITS: 1. Monitor (CRT, LCD, and LED)
2. Printers (all types such as Laser Printer, InkJet Printer, and Dot Matrix
Printer) 3. Graphic Output devices (Multimedia Projector)
4. Plotters
5. Speakers
6. Speech synthesizer

BASIC COMPUTER MODEL

The computer is a model that can be described by four basic units in higher
terms. These basic units are:
❖ Central Processing Unit (CPU)
❖ Input Unit
❖ Output Unit
❖ Memory Unit

COMPUTER BASICS: SETTING UP A DESKTOP COMPUTER

In this lesson, the topic is for beginners having trouble setting up a computer and
feeling overwhelmed. Don't worry, take a deep breath, you already have everything
you need, and you will just put it together. Presently here is the step by step methods
on how to set up a desktop computer.

STEP BY STEP ON HOW TO SET-UP A DESKTOP COMPUTER

1. Unpacked everything in the box and

removed the plastic covering and
protective tapes. Think about the
place
of your workplace to set up your
computer and arrange the
components.

5
2. The next step is to plugin all connectors of
components, first is to plug in the monitor.
All connectors are unique in shape, and it
only identifies either male or female
connectors, makes sure to have the right
one, then tightens the screws to fix it in
place.

. 3. Find the port of your monitor cable at the

back of your computer case and plug it in;
most cables are designed to fit a
certain way, so if it’s not working,
don’t force it.

4. When you’ve done interface the other

conclusion to the screen, the same method
fixes the screws.

5. Presently, it’s time to plug in your keyboard and

mouse. For your keyboard, please take a look at
the connector; it is a PS2 mouse connector male
port, then find at the back of the case of your
computer of the female port, make sure the port
is in proper color coding. Do this
same thing for your mouse, use the
color-coded form.

6
6. Suppose it has a USB plug it in at the back of
your computer case. You can also use a USB
connector on your keyboard if you're using a USB
connection. Now, if you're using a wireless keyboard
or a mouse, it's either Bluetooth connection directly or
using an adapter through the USB connection. You
must rely on instructions in your manual on your
device.

7. The next step is to plugins your

speaker and headphones.
Just
look for the audio port at the
back
of your computer case.
Usually,
the green port is for the speaker
or headphone use, and the blue
color is called a Line-in, which can be used by another type of device.

Some connections of speakers or

audio
headphones are a USB connector;
this can
connect anywhere in a USB port.

8. At long last, it’s time to put through

the power supply cables and plug the
computer in. Your laptop should have a
male and female connector; one goes
to your monitor and the other plug at Female
port
the back of your computer case.
9. Now plug the two cables going to your power surge protector, or you can directly
plugin into your power outlet. However, it's not recommended.
7
10.Without a power surge protector, it can damage your computer and finally, the
main power surge connector to your outlet.

Tips: You can switch turning on the power surge if you want to use your computer
or power off.

Finally, you can now use your computer; all you need to do is turn on the power
switch in the system unit and to your monitor.

Functionalities of a Computer
A digital computer that carries out five functions in higher
terms. • Data as input
• Stores the data/instructions in its memory
• Processes data and converted into information
• Generates output
• All four steps above are controlled.
SUMMARY:
Computers have revolutionized the way how people use, appreciate, and process
data. In this day and age, everyone needs to have at least basic knowledge of how
computer hardware and software work to get the most out of a computer and its
system. With the appropriate input and output tools, computers can process data
for creative and productive purposes.
