Module 2:

1. Explain PCM signal encoding and decoding with a neat block diagram. OR With the aid
of block diagram, explain PCM signal encoding and decoding principle(10 Marks)
2. Discuss different types of text representation. OR Illustrate the different types of text data
representation.(06 Marks)
3. Explain digital formats with neat diagrams:
(i) Aspect ratio
(ii) Quantization Intervals (10 Marks)
4. Derive the transmission time for images at 64 Kbps and 1.5 Mbps. (06 Marks)
5. An analog signal has a dynamic range of 40 dB. Determine the magnitude of
quantization noise relative to minimum signal amplitude if quantizer uses (i) 6-bits (ii)
10-bits. (10 Marks)
6. With an example, explain formatted text and hyper text. OR Illustrate the different
types of text data representation. (06 Marks)
7. Explain in brief the concept of PCM speech.(10 Marks)
8. Derive the bit rate and the memory requirements to store each frame that results
from the digitization of both a 525-line and a 625-line system. Assuming a 4 : 2 : 2
format. Also find the total memory required to store a 1.5 hour movie/video. (10 Marks)
9. Calculate the time to transmit-the following digitized images at both 64 kbps and 1.5
mbps A 640 x 480 x 8 VGA .7.Compatible image. B 1024 x 768 x 24 SVGA -
compatible image.(04 Marks)
10. Explain HDTV formats. (10 Marks)
11. The band width of speech signal is from 50Hz through to 10KHz and that of a music
signal is from 15Hz through to 20KHz. Compute the bit rate that is generated by the
digitization procedure by assuming the Nyquist sampling rate of 12 bits per sample for
speech signal and 16 bits per sample for the music signal. (04 Marks)
12. Assuming the CD-DA standard is being used., compute the time to transmit a 30 second
portion of the title using a transmission channel of bit rate : i) 64 kbps ii) 1.5 Mbps. (04
Marks)
13. Why is the chrominance signal transmitted in the form of two color different signals?
14. Identify the color difference signals associated with the NTSC and PAL systems. (04
Marks)
15. Explain Raster-Scan operation associated with TV/computer monitor. (08 Marks)
16. With a neat circuit components and its associated waveform, explain signal encoder
design. (08 Marks)
17. With the aid of diagram, describe following digitization formats:
i) 4:2:2 ii) SIF iii) CIF (08 Marks)
18. Explain the principle of operation of a PCM speech codec, with a block diagram also explain
the compressor and expander.
19. What is meant by: i. Interleaving Y and C signals in NTSC ii. 4:2:2 and 4:2:0 chroma sub-
sampling Explain with related diagrams.
20. Derive the memory required to store a 10 minute passage of stereophonic music. Assuming
the B/W of a music signal is from 15Hz through to 20 kHz and Nyquist sampling rate as 16
bits/sample for the music signal. December 2010 (4 M)
21. With the aid of diagrams, descried the following 4:2:2, 4:2:0 and QCIF digitization formats.
State the temporal resolution, bitrate and an application for each format. December 2010 (8
M), December 2014 (9M)
22. With the aid of a diagram, explain how an image produced by a scanner or digital camera is
captured and stored with in a computer memory. December 2011 (7 M)
23. Describe raster scan operation associated with TV/computer monitor.
24. Explain the components of audio/sound synthesizer with a neat diagram. December 2013 (6
M)
25. With the aid of a diagram, explain how a color image is captured within a camera scanner
using each of the following methods:
a. Single image Sensor.
b. A single image sensor with filters.
c. Three separate image sensors. Include in your explanations the terms ―photosities and
CCD’s‖ and the role of the read out register. June 2014 ( 10 M)
26. Derive the bit rate and the memory requirements to store each frame that results from the
digitization of both a 525 line and 625 line system, assuming a 4:2:0 format. Also find the
