Analysis of Two-Way Tables

We will use two-way tables when all of our variables are categorical.

Sports, Pets & Gender

Cats Dogs Total Male Female Total Cats Dogs Total

Male Basketball Basketball

Female Football Football

Total Total Total

Before looking at the data, answer the following questions:

o Are boys or girls more likely to own cats or dogs?
o Are boys or girls more likely to play basketball or football (American)?
o Who is more likely to own cats, basketball or football players?

Marginal distribution is when we examine the distribution of a single variable in a two-way table.
Conditional distribution is when we condition on the value of one variable and calculate the distribution of
the other variable.
