CALCULATING

DATA
STORAGE
When referring to
storage space, what
are the terms that we
used?
DATA STORAGE UNITS OF
MEASUREMENT

BYTE

KILOBYTE
MEGABYTE
GIGABYTE
TERABYTE
Bytes are used to store a single
character; whether it is a letter,
number, or symbol. All memory
storage is expressed in terms of
bytes.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO KNOW?

• Once we know the size of a file

or folder, it is possible to
determine the number of bytes
being used.
EXAMPLE:
● A file is 20 KB in size
● 1 KB = 1,024 Bytes

● 1,024 x 20 KB = 20,480 bytes in a 20 KB file

● A 20 KB file is stored in a 1 MB folder then

approximately how many number of files of the same
size can be stored in the same folder.
● (1,048,576 /20,480 = 51.2 file
● 1 MB/20 KB = 51.2 file
ONE 1024 bytes = 1 KB
STEP 1024 KB = 1MB
BACKWARDS 1024 MB = 1 GB
1024 GB = 1 TB

Given: IF A 20 KB FILE IS
STORED IN A 1 MB
1. ) 20 KB(<) and 1 MB(>) FOLDER
2. ) 1 MB - - - > 1024 KB
1. Determine which value has the larger unit
3. ) 1024 ÷ 20 = 51. 2 2. Convert that unit of the storage device into the
unit of the file, for this, use the OSB conversion chart
Approx. 51 as reference.
files
3. Divide both values. Take notice that the amount with a
greater unit represents the dividend, while the figure
with a lower unit represents the divisor.
EXAMPLE:
1. How many 5 MB mp3 files can be
stored on a 1 GB flash drive?

● 1Mb = 1,048,576 x 5 MB = 5,242,880 Bytes

● 1 GB = 1,073,741,824 Bytes

● 1Gb ÷ 5Mb = 204.8 mp3

● 1,073,741,824 ÷ 5,242,880 = 204.8 mp3 files

Answer: Approximately 204 mp3 files

ONE 1024 bytes = 1 KB
STEP 1024 KB = 1MB
BACKWARD 1024 MB = 1 GB
1024 GB = 1 TB

How many 5 MB mp3 files

Given: can be stored on a 1 GB
1. ) 5 MB(<) and 1 GB(>)
flash drive?
2. ) 1 GB - - - > 1024 MB
1. Determine which value has the larger unit
3. ) 1024 MB ÷ 5MB = 204.8
2. Convert that unit of the storage device into the
unit of the file, for this, use the OSB conversion chart
Approx. 204 as reference.
files
3. Divide both values. Take notice that the amount with a
greater unit represents the dividend, while the figure
with a lower unit represents the divisor.
EXAMPLE:
EXAMPLE:
1. How many 1.25 GB mp4 can be stored
in a 1 TB External hard drive?

● 1 TB = 1,024 GB

● 1,024 GB / 1.25 GB

819.2 OR 820 mp4 files can be stored in a

1 TB external hard drive
ONE 1024 bytes = 1 KB
STEP 1024 KB = 1MB
BACKWARDS 1024 MB = 1 GB
1024 GB = 1 TB

How many 1.25 GB mp4

Given can be stored in a 1 TB
:
1. ) 1.25 GB(<) and 1 TB(>)
External hard drive?
2. ) 1 TB - - - > 1024 GB
1. Determine which value has the larger unit
3. ) 1024 GB ÷ 1.25 GB= 819.2
2. Convert that unit of the storage device into the
unit of the file, for this, use the OSB conversion chart
Approx. 819 as reference.
files
3. Divide both values. Take notice that the amount with a
greater unit represents the dividend, while the figure
with a lower unit represents the divisor.
Disadvantage of
Long method

• Large values that overwhelm

students when solving
• Very time-consuming
• Precise but sacrifices speed
Arrange the following storage
devices according to their storage
capacity from 1 -5, where 1 being
the smallest and 5 being the
largest.
