DECIMAL TO BINARY
CONVERSION
- GROUP 3&6 -

ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK
S T E P S

Step 1: To convert a decimal number

to binary, all you have to do is divide
the number by 2.

Step 2: Get the quotient and the

remainder.

@kydlpn
Decimal to Binary Conversion
S T E P S

Step 3: Bring down the quotient, divide it by 2, and

get the quotient and remainder again.

Step 4: Do it repeatedly until the quotient result is

0.

Step 5: Copy the remainder from bottom to top, and

that is the binary equivalent.

EXAMPLE: 19

Quotient Remainder

19/2 9 1
9/2 4 1
4/2 2 0
2/2 1 0
1/2 0 1

19 = 10011

CALCULATING
DATA STORAGE

@kydlpn
ORIGINAL SOUND TRACK
• Bit smallest representation of data
• Byte most basic unit of digital storage
• 1 byte = 8 bits
 This is the smallest unit of measure used to represent
data storage capacity.
• 1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes
• 1 megabyte = 1,048,576 bytes
• 1 gigabyte = 1,073,741,824 bytes
• 1 terabyte = 1,099,511,627,776 bytes
 We use terms bytes(B), kilobytes (KB), megabytes (MB),
gigabytes (GB), and terabytes (TB)when referring to
storage spaces.

CONVERSION AND CALCULATIONS
In general, when
something is represented
digitally, the greater the
detail, the greater the
number of bits needed to
represent it.

A low-resolution from a
digital camera will use
around 360kb, and a high
resolution picture could

@kydlpn
use 2MB or more.
Once we know the size of a file
Examples of components and devices or folder, it is possible to
that use bytes as storage includes:
determine the number of
bytes being used. For
Random Access Memory (RAM) example:
Hard Disk Drive Space
CD’s A file is 20KB in size
DVD’s 1KB = 1024 Bytes
and MP3 Players 20*1024 = 2048 bytes in a
20KB file

@kydlpn
Exercise 1

If a flash drive has 8 Gigabytes capacity, how does it

represent in Megabytes?
Remember: 1 Gigabyte = 1000 Megabytes

Solution:

8GB x 1024 MB =
8192MB
1 GB

@kydlpn
Exercise 1

If a flash drive has 10 Gigabytes capacity, how does it

represent in Megabytes?
Remember: 1 Gigabyte = 1000 Megabytes

Solution:

8GB x 1024 MB =
8192MB
1 GB

@kydlpn
Exercise 2

In a hard drive has 3 terabytes capacity, what is

the equivalent value in gigabyte?

Solution:

3 TB x 1024 GB =
3072GB 1TB

@kydlpn
Exercise 3

There is 1 DVD Solution:

item has a value
of 25 Megabytes, 25 MB x 1024 KB = 25600
How many KB
kilobytes in 1 1 MB
DVD?
