( Sr. No:............................)
A magnetometer is a device that measures magnetic field or magnetic dipole moment. Different types of
magnetometers measure the direction, strength, or relative change of a magnetic field at a particular
location. A compass is one such device, one that measures the direction of an ambient magnetic field, in
this case, the Earth's magnetic field. Other magnetometers measure the magnetic dipole moment of a
magnetic material such as a ferromagnet, for example by recording the effect of this magnetic dipole on
the induced current in a coil.
A magnetometer or a compass is a navigation device that measures the strength of the magnetic field or
magnetic dipole moment. A magnetometer is an instrument with a sensor that measures the magnetic flux
density.
Magnetometers determine the direction, strength, or relative variation in the magnetic field at a certain
location.
We also use magnetometers to calibrate electromagnets and permanent magnets and to determine the
magnetization of the material.
The first magnetometer was invented by Carl Friedrich Gauss in1833 that was capable of measuring
absolute magnetic intensity.
Magnetometers measure the magnetic field along one or more axes. With a magnetometer, you can turn
your Arduino into a digital compass. They’re great for navigation and guidance systems in remote
controlled vehicles. You can even use them to detect electric currents in wires.
Magnetometer HMC5883L measures the direction and magnitude of the Earth’s magnetic field and
hence is used for low cost compassing and magnetometry.
It measures the Earth’s magnetic field value along the X, Y and Z axes from milli-gauss to 8 gauss.
It can be used as a compass to find direction or to find the direction of heading of a device.
It makes use of I2C protocol for communication with a microcontroller. Earth’s magnetic field values
along the X, Y and Z axes can be found by reading values from addresses of certain registers using I2C
communication.
Magnetic fields are created by a variety of sources. An electric current flowing through a wire creates a
magnetic field:
But the magnetic field you’re probably most familiar with is the one created by the Earth’s iron core:
The QMC5883L Magnetometer
The QMC5883L has 5 pins – Vcc, ground, SCL, SDA, and DRDY:
The sensor chip is on top of the board. Magnetometers and other directional sensors will have arrows
on them. These show you the orientation of the sensor in relation to the PCB. This magnetometer
detects magnetic fields in three axes – x, y, and z. The z axis points up and down, perpendicular to the x
and y axes.
HMC5883L 3-axis Electronic Compass Module Magnetic Field Sensor
The GY-273 module is based on the Honeywell HMC5883LIC for low-field magnetic sensing with a
digital interface for applications such as lowcost compassing and magnetometry. The HMC5883L
includes state-of-threat, high-resolution HMC118X series magneto-resistive sensors plus an ASIC
containing amplification; automatic degaussing strap drivers, offset cancellation, and a 12-bit ADC that
enables 1 to 2 compass heading accuracy. The I2C serial bus allows for an easy interface.
These sensors solid-state construction with very low cross-axis sensitivity is designed to measure both
the direction and the magnitude of Earths magnetic fields, from milli-gauss to 8 gausses. Honeywells
Magnetic Sensors are among the most sensitive and reliable low-field sensors in the industry.
Note:
Sometimes markings on these boards vary slightly (e.g. Some may be labeled HW-127 instead of GY-
273 even though they are otherwise identical).
