Grid Reference and Coordinate System

This document discusses grid references and coordinate systems for mapping. It defines terms like Eastings, Northings and grid squares. Grid references use a system of numbers along the edges of a map to accurately pinpoint locations. There are three common types of grid references: four-figure (accurate to 1000m), six-figure (accurate to 100m), and eight-figure (accurate to 10m). The document provides examples of how to read and write four-figure and six-figure grid references.

d. Grid Reference. is a method used to pinpoint a position on the map

quickly
and accurately by using numbers on the edge of the map so that you can
report
them or move to a new location when ordered to do so.

3. Method of taking Grid References (GR) Before you give a grid

reference, you should first have to know where to start from by reading the
numbers on the Easting line then the Northing line.

TYPES OF GR

3. There are three types of GR commonly used:

a. Four figure GR which covers an area of 1000m

b. Six figure GR covers an area to the nearest 100m most commonly
used.
c. Eight figure GR has accuracy to the nearest 10m.

4. A four figure GR is one complete grid square. Identified with at least the
