Key Principles of Design

Instructions:

Get ready to explore the world of design! Complete each section and let your creativity shine!

Section 1: What Are the Principles?

1. Balance

• What is it? Balance is how we make things feel even or exciting in a design.
• Types:
o Symmetrical: Like a butterfly with matching wings.
o Asymmetrical: Different on each side, but still feels balanced.

Activity: Create a Symmetrical Masterpiece! Draw a picture that shows symmetrical

balance (like a butterfly or a heart) in the space provided below.
2. Contrast

• What is it? Contrast is when we use different colors or shapes to make things pop!
• Example: Bright yellow next to deep purple creates a bold look.

Activity: Color Challenge! Write down two colors that look great together. How would you
use them in a design?

Two colors that look great together are teal and gold.

In a design, I would use teal as the dominant background color, as it's calming and modern, while gold would be used for accents like borders,

text, or decorative elements. This combination is elegant and creates a balance between a cool tone and a warm, luxurious one.

For example, in a room design, teal walls with gold-framed mirrors and light fixtures could create a chic, sophisticated atmosphere. In graphic

design, teal could be used for large sections or backgrounds, with gold highlights drawing attention to important details or text.

3. Emphasis

• What is it? Emphasis is all about making one part of your design the star of the
show!
• How to do it: Make it bigger, bolder, or use a special color.

Activity: Highlight Your Star! Draw a picture in the space provided below and choose one
part to emphasize. Show us how you made it stand out!
4. Unity

• What is it? Unity means that everything in your design feels like it belongs together.
• How to achieve it: Use similar colors or shapes that match.

Activity: Color Harmony! List three colors you would use to create a design that feels
unified.

5. Repetition

• What is it? Repetition is when you use the same shapes or colors again and again to
create a rhythm.
• Why it’s cool: It helps make a design feel complete and familiar.

Activity: Find Your Favorite! Think of a cartoon or brand you love. How do they use
repetition?

Section 3: Think About It

6. Design Detective

• Choose a picture or design you admire. Write one sentence about how it uses one of
the principles we learned.
