LESSON 1
PRODUCE SLEEPING GARMENTS
LEARNING OUTCOME 1
Draft and Cut Pattern for Sleeping Garments
This is designed for Grade 9 students to develop competencies: plans, designs and sews
sleeping garments and children’s wear. It discusses and explains the tools, materials and equipment
used in the making of desired products. It also demonstrates different techniques and processes
which will guide the learner in developing the skills and knowledge to work effectively and efficiently.
Lesson 1
Principles and Elements of Design
The personality of the wearer shows the kind of image she projects. Personalities differ
depending on the kind of clothing people wear. Hence, they prefer clothing that is comfortable,
attractive and fashionable. They can wear all kinds of clothing of varied style, colors and
design with confidence. You are expected to:
Guide Questions:
1. What are the different principles of design shown in the video presentation? On the picture?
2. What are the different elements of design shown in the video presentation? On the picture
3. How do principles and elements of design differ from one another?
Principles of design
1. Proportion- Is the relationship in size between various part and the whole.
B. Informal or asymmetrical- when the design is balance but each side is different in
some way.
C. Radial balance- achieve all parts of the design are at the equal distance from a
central point.
Elements of design
1. Line- creates a visual dimension of length and width
2. Color- is a radiant energy loosely termed light that produces sensation in our eyes.
3. Space-is the area inside an enclosed shape.
4. Form or shape- refers to the form of a person showing the curve of the body.
5. Texture is the surface quality of an subject, rough , smooth , silky and etc.

What I know?
Activity 1.1 “ Where I am”
Identify what principles and elements shows in the picture. Point out where part of the
garment design does it show. You can answer as many as you can as long as you can prove it.
Example:
Principle: Emphasis – the flower in front of the dress
Elements: Color - combination of pink, silver and green

What’s In?
Activity 1.2 : “Justify Me”
Direction:
In this activity you will identify design elements and principles as they pertain to images of dress
design. For each of the following, choose one element of design and one principle of design that you
feel is most prominent in the image and then justify your choice.
