WHAT IS VOLUNTEERISM?
Volunteerism is the engagement of people to support a
cause or community through free labour to do
community service. Simply put, it is contributing your
time and energy without any financial gain in return
but as a social responsibility towards those who need
your support.

WHAT IS VOLUNTEERISM?
In 2007, Republic Act No. 9418 or the “Volunteer Act of
2007” was enacted to provide a policy framework on
volunteerism. It highlighted the fundamental principles
of the voluntary sector to harness and harmonize the
same for an integrative and effective partnership for
local and national development.

Volunteering exists in many
forms, from informally helping
your community to supporting a
nonprofit. In fact, one-third of
the nonprofit workforce is made
up of volunteers. This means
that if you run a nonprofit,
volunteers are likely a major
part of your organization.

A self-directed or self-led volunteer is someone
who sees a need or learns about a project ; gets
resources with instructions, suggestions, and
other material to support taking action; and then
takes action to do the suggested activity on his
or her own time, in his or her own way, for
recipients she or he selects.

FAMILY
“Family volunteering” in fact, can take many
forms. For example, growing and donating
vegetables to a food pantry, together, is a family
volunteer project. So, too, is doing yard work or
running errands for a homebound neighbor, or
helping an older adult navigate computers and
smartphones.

FRIEND
If you have the skill of listening and being present,
you are a suitable volunteer friend candidate. No
special skills are required. The friend activities are
intended for all kinds of people: young people,
seniors, students, people with families, people
living alone, men and women. You can choose the
way you wish to help.

BLOCK
This led us to start volunteering together within
the block or section helping with literacy. We
discuss books one-on-one with students and then
work in groups to encourage them to be
passionate and confident about their abilities. It’s
been wonderful to see their skills develop with a
help from the classmate.

ORGANIZATION
Organizations appreciate volunteers who stay with
them for long term. Voluntarily joining a club or
organization helps them to dominate and spread
the goal within the audiences. If you do plan on
leaving, it is respectful to give a 2 week notice and
ask if they have anything that is required of you.

The “genesis” of every noble volunteering
initiative is a desire to make life better for
others, especially those who are
underprivileged. Volunteers are those
individuals who are commited to solving a
problem in society not for any direct economic
benefits but with the objective of putting
smiles on the face of others.

SACRIFICE
To sacrifice simply means to give up something
valuable in order to attain a desired objective. True
volunteerism requires a great deal of sacrifice. A
response to the call to volunteerism demands a
willingness to sacrifice one’s time, energy, money
and other resources as well as stepping outside
your comfort zone all in the name of making a
difference in the life of others. Sometimes to show
love will mean “to give, but give until it hurts”. And
that’s what sacrifice is all about.

SERVICE
One question that keeps ringing in the mind
of well-meaning volunteers is; what can I do
in my own small way to contribute to
“healing the world and making it a better
place.”? The foundation of volunteerism is
LOVE. And love as Mother Teresa once said ”
cannot remain by itself — it has no meaning.
Love has to be put into action and that
action is service.”

SUPPORT
Individuals or groups who are volunteering to
provide solutions to some identified
problems and causing a positive change in
society should be acknowledged and
encouraged. You should support such ones
financially if you have the means. If not, you
can equally support with your prayers and
that will also count as an invaluable
contribution.

ENVIRONMENTAL VOLUNTEER WORK
Volunteering in environmental
conservation will appeal to people
wanting to combine their love of
nature and the outdoors with a
meaningful activity. Tasks such as
reforestation, cleaning up beaches,
nature trail construction and
invasive species management are
just some volunteer work examples.
ENVIRONMENTAL VOLUNTEER WORK

such as birds, possums, lizards and
turtles.

taking classes, preparing lesson plans,
assigning tasks to students, administering
tests, grading student work and making
learning English fun and engaging for both
adults and children.
SOCIAL VOLUNTEER WORK

With an ageing population and many
elderly people cut off from their
communities, volunteering is a great
way to improve the lives of older
generations. From volunteering at a
nursing home to delivering Meals on
Wheels, helping an elderly shopper at
the grocery store, or simply calling and
checking in each morning, the
opportunities are endless.

The youth-centered programs focus on

high school students or university
