DOUBLY-REINFORCED BEAM
c = a / β1
4. If both steel yields, compute for moment
Mn = Mn1 + Mn2
Mn = As1 fy ( d – a/2 ) + As2 fy (d – d’) or
Mn = 0.85 f’c a b ( d – a/2 ) + A’s f’s (d – d’)
T = Cc + C’s
As fy = 0.85 f’c a b + A’s f’s

Problem No. 2:
For the given beam, determine the ultimate moment capacity. Use NSCP 2010
150 mm
Given:
A’s d’ = 60 mm
d = 510 mm
510 mm h = 600 mm
f’c = 20 Mpa
fy = 415 Mpa
As As = 8 - 25 mm

Problem No. 3:
A rectangular beam has b = 310 mm and d = 460 mm. The beam will be designed to carry a service dead
load of 230 kN-m and service live load of 190 kN-m. Compression reinforcement if necessary will have its
centroid 70 mm from extreme concrete fiber. Determine the required steel area. Use f’c = 30 MPa, fy = 415
MPa, and NSCP 2015.
Problem No. 4:
A rectangular concrete beam having a width of 250 mm and a total depth of 500 mm will be designed to
carry a factored load of 448 kN-m. The steel yield strength, fy = 415 MPa, and the concrete strength f’c = 27.6
MPa. If the compression steel is found at 80 mm from the extreme compression fiber of the beam,
considering the effect of the displaced concrete using NSCP 2010;
a. Determine the depth of the compression block
b. Determine the reinforcement of compression if needed
c. Determine the reinforcement of tension steel
