INVESTIGATION AND DESIGN OF

DOUBLY-REINFORCED BEAM

- ENGR. JERVIN BON C. TAYDE, RCE, MMEnP, RMP, ME-1

ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF
DOUBLY-REINFORCED BEAM

As < Asmax - SRB

As > Asmax - DRB
DOUBLY-REINFORCED BEAM

C’s = A’s(f’s – 0.85f’c)

STEPS FOR INVESTIGATION
1. Assume both steel yields (fs = f’s = fy), 3. Check if tension & compression steel
A’s = As2 yields
As1 = As - As2
𝑓′𝑠/𝐸𝑠 0.003
2. Solve for the depth of compression
𝑐−𝑑′
= 𝑐
block ‘a’ and c,
Cc = T1 If f’s ≥ fy, compression steel yields
0.85 f’c a b = As1 fy f’s < fy, compression steel does not yield
As1 fy
a=
0.85 f’c b

c = a / β1
4. If both steel yields, compute for moment
Mn = Mn1 + Mn2
Mn = As1 fy ( d – a/2 ) + As2 fy (d – d’) or
Mn = 0.85 f’c a b ( d – a/2 ) + A’s f’s (d – d’)

5. If compression steel does not yield, compute the value of f’s

𝑐 −𝑑′
f’s = 600 ( )
𝑐

T = Cc + C’s
As fy = 0.85 f’c a b + A’s f’s
𝑐 −𝑑′
As fy = 0.85 f’c c β1 b + A’s [600 ( )]
𝑐

After obtaining f’s, proceed to step 4.

STEPS FOR DESIGN
1. Check if Singly or Doubly
Singly if;
ρ ≤ ρmax
Otherwise, Doubly.

2. Solve for Area of Tension Steel

As1 = ρmaxbd • Solve for As2
0.85 f’c a b = As1 fy Mn2 = As2fy(d-d’)

• Determine the excess moment, Mn 2 • Solve for As

Mn2 = Mn – Mn1 As = As1 + As2
3. Check if compression steel yields

𝑓′𝑠/𝐸𝑠 0.003
𝑐−𝑑′
= 𝑐

If f’s ≥ fy, compression steel yields

f’s < fy, compression steel does not yield

4. Equate Cs to T2 to solve for A’s

A’s (f’s – 0.85f’c ) = As2 fy

A’s (fy – 0.85f’c ) = As2 fy

A’s f’s = As2 fy

A’s fy = As2 fy
Problem No. 1: CE BOARD NOV 2010 / 2012
A simply supported beam is reinforced with 4-28 mm diameter at the bottom and 2-28mm diameter at the
top of the beam. Steel covering to centroid of reinforcement is 70 mm at the top and bottom of the beam.
The beam has a total depth of 400 mm and a width of 300 mm. Determine the service live load at the
midspan in addition to a DL = 20 kN/m including the weight of the beam if it has a span of 6 m. Use f’c = 30
Mpa, fy = 415 Mpa, and NSCP 2010.

As = 4-28 mmØ

300 mm
Problem No. 2:
For the given beam, determine the ultimate moment capacity. Use NSCP 2010

150 mm
Given:
A’s d’ = 60 mm
d = 510 mm
510 mm h = 600 mm
f’c = 20 Mpa
fy = 415 Mpa
As As = 8 - 25 mm
160 mm A’s = 2- 25 mm
150 mm
350 mm
Problem No. 3:
A rectangular beam has b = 310 mm and d = 460 mm. The beam will be designed to carry a service dead
load of 230 kN-m and service live load of 190 kN-m. Compression reinforcement if necessary will have its
centroid 70 mm from extreme concrete fiber. Determine the required steel area. Use f’c = 30 MPa, fy = 415
MPa, and NSCP 2015.
Problem No. 4:
A rectangular concrete beam having a width of 250 mm and a total depth of 500 mm will be designed to
carry a factored load of 448 kN-m. The steel yield strength, fy = 415 MPa, and the concrete strength f’c = 27.6
MPa. If the compression steel is found at 80 mm from the extreme compression fiber of the beam,
considering the effect of the displaced concrete using NSCP 2010;
a. Determine the depth of the compression block
b. Determine the reinforcement of compression if needed
c. Determine the reinforcement of tension steel
