November Month Plan CBSE - 10 Statistics Assignment

Part - 1 Solutions
Question: 1) Find the mean of the following distribution:
C. I Fi

3-5 5

5-7 10

7-9 10

9 - 11 7

11 - 13 8

Solution:
C. I Fi xi xiFi

3-5 5 4 20

5-7 10 6 60

7-9 10 8 80

9 - 11 7 10 70

11 - 13 8 12 96

∑ Fi = 40 ∑ Fixi=326

∑𝑥𝑖𝐹𝑖 326
Mean = ∑𝐹𝑖
= 40
= 8. 15

Mean = 8.15
Question: A group of students surveyed as a part of their environmental awareness.
The program in which they collected the following data regarding the number of plants in
20 homes in a locality. Find the mean number of plants per household using the assumed
mean method.
Number of plants 0-2 2-4 4-6 6-8 8 - 10 10 - 12 12 - 14

Number of houses 1 2 1 5 6 2 3

Solution:
No.of plants Class Marks No. of houses di = xi - a fidi
(xi ) (fi)

0-2 1 1 1 - 7 = -6 -6

2-4 3 2 3 - 7 = -4 -8

4-6 5 1 5 - 7 = -2 -2

6-8 7=a 5 7-7=0 0

8 - 10 9 6 9-7=2 12

10 - 12 11 2 11 - 7 = 9 18

12 - 14 13 3 13 - 7 = 6 18
Σfi = 20 Σfidi = 20
∑𝑓𝑖𝑑𝑖
𝑥= 𝑎 + ∑𝑓𝑖
32
= 7+ 20
8
= 7+ 5
= 8.6
Question: Consider the following distribution of daily wages of 50 workers of a factory
Find the mean daily wages of the workers of the factory by using an appropriate method.
Daily wages (in ₹) 500 - 520 520 - 540 540 - 560 560 - 580 580 - 600

Number of houses 12 14 8 6 10
Solution:
Let assumed mean = 550 and h = 20.
Daily Wages No. of Class Marks di = xi - a ui fiui
houses ( fi ) ( xi )

500 - 520 12 510 -40 -2 -24

520 - 540 14 530 -20 -1 -14

540 - 560 8 550 0 0 0

560 - 580 6 570 20 1 6

580 - 600 10 590 40 2 20

Σfi = 50 Σfiui = -12

Σfi = 50 Σfiui = -12 a = 550 h = 20

Mean by Step - Deviation Method:
𝑥= 𝑎 + ( )
∑𝑓𝑖𝑢𝑖
∑𝑓𝑖

= 550 + ( )20
−12
50
2750−24
𝑥= 5

𝑥 = 545. 2
Question: The mean of the below data is 5.5. Find the missing frequency (y) in the below
distribution.
x y

2 3

4 5

6 6

8 y
Solution:
We have,
Mean = 5.5
6+20+36+8𝑥
⇒ 3+5+6+𝑥
= 5. 5
⇒ 62 + 8x = (14 + x) × 5.5
⇒ 2.5 x = 15
⇒x=6

Question: 5) For some data x1, x,...xn with respective frequencies f1, f,...fn, then value of
𝑛
( )
∑ 𝑓𝑖 𝑥𝑖 − 𝑐 is equal to
1

(a) 𝑛𝑥
(b) 1
(c) ∑fi
(d) 0
Solution:
∑𝑓𝑖𝑥𝑖
𝑥= ∑𝑓𝑖

∴∑𝑓𝑖𝑥𝑖 − 𝑥∑𝑓𝑖 = 0

(
∑𝑓𝑖 𝑥𝑖 − 𝑥 = 0 )
∴ Option d is the correct answer.
Question: 6) Find the mean of the first 7 prime numbers.
(a) 8.29
(b) 9.15
(c) 8.76
(d) 8.27
Solutions:
The first seven prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13 and 17.
Total sum of all the observations = 2 + 3 + 5 + 7 + 11 + 13 + 17 = 58
No. of Observations = 7
58
Mean of all observations = 7
= 8.29
Thus, the arithmetic mean of the first 7 prime numbers is 8.29.

Question: 7) In a test, the marks obtained by 100 students (out of 50) are given below:
Marks obtained: 0 - 10 10 - 20 20 - 30 30 - 40 40 - 50

Number of students: 12 23 34 25 6
Find the mean marks of the students.

Solution:
Marks obtained Number of students xi xi - 25 uifi
fi

0 - 10 12 5 -20 -240

10 - 20 23 15 -10 -230

20 - 30 34 25 0 0

30 - 40 25 35 10 250

40 - 50 6 45 20 120

100 -100
Let assumed mean = 25
ui = xi - 25
Short cut method
𝑢𝑖𝑓𝑖
𝑥= 𝑎 + ∑ 𝑓𝑖
(−100)
= 25 + 100
= 25 - 1
𝑥 = 24

Question: 8) Following is the daily expenditure on lunch by 30 employees of a company:

Daily Expenditure Number of
(in Rupee) Employees

100 - 120 8

120 - 140 3

140 - 160 8

160 - 180 6

180 - 200 5
Find the mean daily expenditure of the employees.

Solution:
Daily no. of employees di xi fidi
Expenditure

100 - 120 8 -40 110 320

120 - 140 3 -20 130 -60

140 - 160 8 0 150 0

160 - 180 6 20 170 120

180 - 200 5 40 190 200

∑𝑓𝑖𝑑𝑖 (−60)
𝑥= 𝑎 + ∑𝑓𝑖
= 150 + 30
= 150 − 2

∴ 𝑥 = 148

Question: 9) Find the mean of the following data using the assumed mean method:
Class : 0-5 5 - 10 10 - 15 15 - 20 20 - 25

Frequency : 8 7 10 13 12
Solution:
Let us first construct the table for di × fi,
where di = xi - A (assumed mean), as shown below:

Class Class Marks (xi) Frequency di = xi - A di × fi

0-5 2.5 8 -10 -80

5 - 10 7.5 7 -5 -35

10 - 15 12.5 = A 10 0 0
15 - 20 17.5 13 5 65

20 - 25 22.5 12 10 120

∑fi = 50 ∑fidi = 70
Let A = 12.5
Then ∑fidi = 70
Now, the required mean
∑𝑓𝑖𝑑𝑖
(𝑥) = 𝐴 + ∑𝑓𝑖

70
= 12. 5 + 50

= 12.5 + 1.4
= 13.9

Question: 10) Daily wages of 110 workers, obtained in a survey, are tabulated below:
Daily wages (in Rs) Numbers of workers

100 - 120 10

120 - 140 15

140 - 160 20

160 - 180 22

180 - 200 18

200 - 220 12

220 - 240 13
Compute the mean daily waves of these workers.
Solution:
We first find the classmark, xi of each class and then proceed as follows:
Daily wages (in Rs) Class Marks (xi) Numbers of workers fixi

100 - 120 110 10 1100

120 - 140 130 15 1950

140 - 160 150 20 3000

160 - 180 170 22 3740

180 - 200 190 18 3420

200 - 220 210 12 2520

220 - 240 230 13 2990

fi = 110, fixi = 18720

𝑓𝑖𝑥𝑖 18720
Therefore, Mean = 𝑥 = 𝑓𝑖
= 110
= 170. 20
Hence, the mean daily wages of the workers is Rs 170.20.
