4 Installation

Please use the anchor bolts to firmly fix the pump. In case
of pump toppling, there will be injury danger. In addition, it
may lead to pipe damage danger due to pump vibration.
Please move the product cautiously according to the lifting
method (nameplate). Otherwise, there is the danger of
Warning drop and injury.
Do not pour water on the motor. Otherwise, it may cause
electric shock, electric leakage, fire and trouble.
Handling and construction of a pump should work safely in
consideration of mass or shape. Otherwise, there is the
danger of fall and injury.
When the motor insulation-resistance test upon
installation, please remove the wires from the control
panel, and use the insulation-resistance meter matching
the power voltage to measure the insulation resistance.
Wiring can be done after confirming that the resistance
between the motor lead wire and the ground exceeds
1MΩ. Otherwise, it may cause electric shock and fire due
to motor burning.
Never cover the motor with blanket and cloth. Sometimes,
fire may occur due to overheating.
Caution When the water in pumps, such as a winter season, may
be a freeze, prevent a freeze by keeping warm, heater
attachment, drainage, etc. If the water is frozen while the
pump is stopped, such frozen water could break the
pump.
Since the coolant, rubber mold release and foreign objects
may be mixed in the medium during production, please
arrange proper filter at the outlet side according to
different devices and purposes, and conduct adequate
cleaning, and use the product after confirming no foreign
objects.

1. Installation location
Don’t install it outside or at places with moisture.
Otherwise, electric shock, current leakage or fire due to
insulation degradation may occur.
Please consider the machine life. Place the pump with
good ventilation, without dust, corrosive and explosive
gases, salt, moisture, steam, condensation, wind and rain
and no direct sunshine. Under bad environment, it may
Warning cause current leakage, electric shock or fire due to
insulation.
Install the pump in the locked pump room or equipment
room. When it is placed outside, please arrange the fence
and cover to avoid easy touch by the third person. If the
rotating or high-temperature part is touched, unimaginable
injury may happen.

(1) This pump must be installed indoor.

(2) Choose a location that is convenient for pump maintenance and inspection.
(3) Implement appropriate measures, such as a fence, to prevent any unauthorized person from
touching the pump.

-6- EBARA MACHINERY (CHINA) CO.,LTD.

(4) Install the pump as close to the water source as possible. Also, the pump should be installed
at a location where the suction height (height from the water surface to the pump center) can
be minimized, and the suction piping length can be shortened.
(5) Keep the total suction head within - 6 m (for the diameter 100×80, 50 Hz: - 5 m). There are
cases where the water level must be increased when handling hot water.

3. Centering
After the couplings are aligned, please install the coupling
Warning guard. In addition, during pump operation; don’t be close
to the rotating parts to prevent damage.

Centering of the pump is properly performed at factory before transportation, but the base is twisted
along a floor when anchor bolts are fixed during installation. As a result, the center of a pump shaft
and a motor shaft causes a misalignment.
When the pump is operated with which the pump shaft and the motor shaft had a misalignment, it
will become causes, such as vibration, noise, and unusual wear of bearing.
Please be sure to perform centering adjustment according to the following at the installation.

-8- EBARA MACHINERY (CHINA) CO.,LTD.

Fig.7 Misalignment of the shaft center between the pump and the motor at the installation

(1) Centering accuracy

The centering accuracy should be within the range indicated below for each four points of the
outer circumference and clearance of the couplings.

be less than 0.05mm. The clearance between the couplings should be
set to 2 to 4 mm.
The misalignment between A and B must be less
than 0.1 mm.

(2) Centering adjustment

Make a centering adjustment by putting a wedge under the base.
(a) Position of inserting wedge
Make a centering adjustment by putting a wedge under the base. The wedges should be
inserted in the both sides of base and anchor bolts, and in the place where a base tends to
bend (middle of anchor bolt and anchor bolt) if necessary.

(b) Centering adjustment

Looking at the condition of the alignment of couplings, the alignment of couplings is
adjusted in range permissible by driving in wedges suitably.
In addition, since a wedge portion will be buried with mortar after installation, future
alignments should insert a liner under the motor. When the motor will be installed on the
base at the site, make centering by putting a liner under the motor similarly.
Removing the coupling guard is required for centering, but the guard must be attached
before operation.

on the motor, the primary side and secondary side of
control panel, and power machine in the control panel; and
remove the dust. If bad connection or dust adsorbed on
the terminal part due to loose wire connection, it may lead
to heating and the danger of fire accident.
Please implement the grounding works. If it operates
without firm installation of grounding wire, the danger of
Warning electric shock may appear upon fault and electric leakage.
To use and install the pump shall be implemented by
specialized technician. Otherwise, it may cause fire, injury
and other accidents.
Specialized technician shall correctly implement the wiring
works. Please confirm whether the wiring terminals are

5 Operation

After the couplings are aligned, please install the coupling

guard. In addition, during pump operation; don’t be close to the
rotating parts to prevent damage.
During pump operation, don’t touch the shaft, coupling and
other rotating parts. In addition, even if the pump is stopped,
when the power switch is turned on, sometimes the pump may
suddenly run due to automatic operation, so don’t touch the
shaft, coupling and other rotating parts. Since the rotating parts
are rotating at a high speed, there is injury danger.
Warning Don’t install the pump and motor near dangerous and
flammable articles. Otherwise, it may cause fire due to ignition.
Don’t be operated the pump run for above 2minutes when the
discharge valve is closed. Otherwise, it may cause pump body
and plug damage and motor burning due to pump pressure and
temperature rise.
Don’t touch the charge part under turning power switch on.
Otherwise, there is the danger of electric shock.
Do not pour water on the motor. Otherwise, it may cause
electric shock, electric leakage, fire and fault.
If the pump is to be out of use for a long time, please implement
the test run according to the “Installation” and “operation”
item. Otherwise, it may cause unsmooth pump operation,
motor burning or idle operation.
Avoid the pump operation without priming and permitting air to
enter the handled liquid. Otherwise, the pump, bearing, shaft
seal damage or pumping could not disabled. In addition, it may
cause scald with pump overheating.
Don’t touch the pump when the handled liquid exceeds 40℃.
The pump temperature is high; touching the pump causes
scald.
To prevent an accident if the pump stops running or an
abnormality occurs, immediately turn off the power switch.
Contact the shop from which you ordered the pump or
BEIJING EBARA MACHINERY to perform an inspection and
maintenance on the pump.
Don’t approach the inlet for suction pipe of the pump.
Otherwise, it may cause the injury of hands and feet by pump
Caution operation.
When the motor insulation-resistance test upon installation,
please remove the wires from the control panel, and use the
insulation-resistance meter matching the power voltage to
measure the insulation resistance. Wiring can be done after
confirming that the resistance between the motor lead wire and
the ground exceeds 1MΩ. Otherwise, it may cause electric
shock and fire due to motor burning.
Do not touch the motor. The motor temperature is high;
touching the motor causes scald.
When the water in the pipe is drained off, don’t turn power
switch on. Otherwise, it may scald by operating without
priming, pump damage and overheating.
Operate the pump within the range of specification. If the pump
is used under quantity change, avoid the operation under less
than the minimum quantity (equivalent to that of pump inlet
diameter [mm]. For example, for 50mm, 50L/min). Otherwise,
pump is air locked, and/or it may cause pump damage due to
pressure and temperature of pump rising.

-12- EBARA MACHINERY (CHINA) CO.,LTD.

1. Preparation for startup
(1) Flush the piping before operating the pump. At this time, attach a strainer to the suction side
so that foreign matters (metal dust from piping, sand, rust, and scale, etc.) do not enter the
pump. Without flushing, the mechanical seal and rotating parts may be worn out.
(2) Rotate the pump by hand to check that it rotates smoothly. Non-smooth rotation means that
there is rust in the pump or that the gland packing is over-tightened; check these items.
(3) Prime the pump. Without priming, a pump failure may occur. For pump priming, open the
discharge valve and pour water from the priming funnel or port. When the pipeline is already
filled with water, and the pump can be filled up to the outlet, open the suction and discharge
valves for pump priming.
(4) During pump priming, rotate the pump shaft by hand to bleed air completely from the inside of
the impeller.
(5) Tighten the gland bolt nuts to the extent that the coupling can be turned by one hand to prevent
excessive leakage from the shaft seal (gland packing type).

2. Operation
(1) Close the discharge valve after pump priming. For the pouring and boosting type, fully open
the suction valve.
(2) Turn on and off the switch a couple of times to check that the rotation direction (right-hand
rotation in the view from the motor fan side) and the operation condition are normal.
Please confirm the pump rotation direction. In case of three-phase power
Note supply and inverse operation, please change the connection and
conduct right rotation direction.

Don't operate under opposite rotation direction. Otherwise, an accident

Note may occur due to vibration or loose impeller nuts and bolts.

(3) When the rotational speed reaches the specified level, gradually open the discharge valve for
continuous operation.
(4) Check the pressure, current, vibration, and noise (for other parameters, see 6 Maintenance).
The valves for the pressure gauge and the compound gauge should remain closed except
when used for measurements. Left open, they could be damaged.
(5) When there is no check valve installed at the discharge side, stop the operation by gradually
closing the discharge valve and then stopping the motor.
(6) In second and subsequent operations, the pump can be immediately started provided that
there is no abnormality observed with reference to 6 Maintenance.

Avoid the operation under cavitation. In case of operation under too large
quantity, it may sometimes cause cavitation. When vibration or noise
Note happens, or specified quantity (pressure) cannot be out, it must be
cavitation. So, slowly close the discharge valve and operatetion flow rate
is reduced.

Don't operate when the air mixed in the handled liquid cannot be
Note discharged. It may cause the damage of pump bearing or shaft seal, or
not to pump up.

-13- EBARA MACHINERY (CHINA) CO.,LTD.

3. Gland packing adjustment … Gland packing type
Adjust the gland packing so that the specified leakage rate is achieved.

(1) Align and push packing pieces into the packing box, one by one. Position the packing joints
differently, changing the angle in 90 to 120 degrees, so that the joint of the last piece faces
down.
(2) Tighten the gland packing.
(a) Tighten the gland bolt nuts with fingers to the extent that the shaft is hard to be rotated by
hand.
(b) Tighten the nuts alternately to avoid uneven tightening.
(3) Adjust the gland packing.
(a) During the early phase of operation, have a relatively high leakage rate (Table 2) and pay
attention to heat and noise. Continue this break-in operation for 10 to 30 minutes.
(b) Be sure not to let the leakage rate decrease to 0 mL/min. When the leakage rate is too low,
the sliding surfaces may wear out, making leakage rate adjustment difficult.
(c) After the break-in operation, retighten the gland bolt nuts alternately to avoid uneven
tightening until the proper leakage rate is stably achieved. Then, start continuous
operation.
Specifications of the leakage rate (guideline) are shown in Table 1.

Table 1 Gland packing leakage rate (guideline)

(mL/min)
Shaft diameter (mm) Early phase of operation Continuous operation
15 30 15
20 40 20
25 50 25
35 70 35
45 90 45
55 110 55

The shaft diameters above correspond to those for the gland packing described in the
consumable parts dimension list ( 7 Maintenance) (For example, the shaft diameter is 15
mm for 15×27×6 – 3 pieces).

(d) To reduce the leakage rate, quick retightening may generate heat. Gradually retighten the
nuts at intervals of 10 to 30 minutes.

6 Maintenance

If the pump is to be out of use, turn off the power. If the power is
left on and insulation deteriorates, electric shock, electrical
leakage or fire could result.
After the couplings are aligned, please install the coupling guard.
In addition, during pump operation; don’t be close to the rotating
parts to prevent damage.
During pump operation, don’t touch the shaft, coupling and other
rotating parts. In addition, even if the pump is stopped, when the
power switch is turned on, sometimes the pump may suddenly
run due to automatic operation, so don’t touch the shaft, coupling
and other rotating parts. Since the rotating parts are rotating at a
high speed, there is injury danger.
Don’t install the pump and motor near dangerous and flammable
articles. Otherwise, it may cause fire due to ignition.
Please confirm that there are no loose wire connections on the
motor, the primary side and secondary side of control panel, and
power machine in the control panel; and remove the dust. If bad
connection or dust adsorbed on the terminal part due to loose
wire connection, it may lead to heating and the danger of fire
accident.
Don’t be operated the pump run for above 2minutes when the
discharge valve is closed. Otherwise, it may cause pump body
and plug damage and motor burning due to pump pressure and
temperature rise.
Warning Don’t touch the charge part under turning power switch on.
Otherwise, there is the danger of electric shock.
Don’t burn plastic components. In case of burning, it may
generate harmful gases.
Please move the product cautiously according to the lifting
method (cautions label). Otherwise, there is the danger of drop
and injury.
Upon overhaul or repair, please cut off the power switch. Injury
may occur due to sudden pump start or there is the danger of
electric shock and injury.
Do not pour water on the motor. Otherwise, it may cause electric
shock, electric leakage, fire and trouble.
Handling and construction of a pump should work safely in
consideration of mass or shape. Otherwise, there is the danger of
fall and injury.
Persons other than repair technicians never conduct disassemble
or repair. Otherwise, it may sometimes cause injury due to electric
shock, fire, abnormal action or damage.
In disassembling or repair, please close the suction and discharge
valves and drain the pump water off, and the work is conducted
on condition of no pump pressure rise and no negative pressure.
There may be the danger of abnormal pump rotation or pump
damage due to incomplete operation and the suction and
discharge pressure difference.

-15- EBARA MACHINERY (CHINA) CO.,LTD.

Upon stopping operation, please drain off the water in the
Caution pump and pipe. Otherwise, it may flow of bacteria due to
corrupted lagging water.
If the pump is to be out of use for a long time, please
implement the test run according to the “installation” and
“operation” item. Otherwise, it may cause unsmooth pump
operation, motor burning or idle operation.
Avoid the pump operation without priming and permitting
air to enter the handled liquid. Otherwise, the pump,
bearing, shaft seal damage or pumping could not disabled.
In addition, it may cause scald with pump overheating.
Don’t touch the pump when the handled liquid exceeds
40℃. The pump temperature is high; touching the pump
causes scald.
To prevent an accident if the pump stops running or an
abnormality occurs, immediately turn off the power switch.
Contact the shop from which you ordered the pump or
EBARA MACHINERY (CHINA) CO. Ltd. to perform an
inspection and maintenance on the pump.
Please regularly replace the consumable parts. If they are
used under aging or wearing, the water leakage, sticking,
damage or other major troubles may happen. Please
entrust the distributor, EBARA MACHINERY (CHINA) CO.
Ltd. to conduct regular repair or replacement of parts and
components.
Don’t approach the inlet for suction pipe of the pump.
Caution Otherwise, it may cause the injury of hands and feet by
pump operation.
Please confirm whether the connection of motor terminals
is loose or removed. In case of loose or removed
connection, it may cause burn motor due to missed-phase
operation (for three-phase motor).
Do not touch the motor. The motor temperature is high;
touching the motor causes scald.
Do not cover the motor with blanket and cloth. Sometimes,
fire may occur due to overheating.
When the water in the pipe is drained off, never connect the
power supply. Otherwise, it may cause pump damage, and
burn due to overheating by pump operation without
priming.
Please regularly confirm the action of protective relay. In
case of an accident, it cannot act normally, and there may
be electric shock and trouble.
Operate the pump within the range of specification. If the
pump is used under quantity change, avoid the operation
under less than the minimum quantity (equivalent to that of
pump inlet diameter [mm]. For example, for 50mm,
50L/min). Otherwise, pump is air locked, and/or it may
cause pump damage due to pressure and temperature of
pump rising.

1. Daily inspection
(1) Readings of the pressure, current, capacity, vibration, and noise that are different from usual
are a sign that something is wrong; when such a reading is observed, promptly take the
appropriate corrective action given in 7 Troubleshooting. It is a good idea to post a daily
operation record chart to help in determining abnormal readings.
(2) The bearing temperature should not be higher than a room temperature + 40 ℃ or 80 ℃.
(3) When a mechanical seal is used for shaft sealing, there is almost no water leakage. However,
replace the seal if the water leakage increases.

Vibration standard
(Horizontal pump: vibration at the center of the bearing)
(4) For the gland packing type, make sure that
water is properly. Avoid over-tightening or

Amplitude
uneven tightening of the gland packing. Vibration standard value
When the leakage rate cannot be adjusted,
the shaft seal has worn out. Replace the
gland packing or a pair of the gland
packing and the shaft to adjust the
leakage rate.
(5) A right figure is the criterion value of
vibration when installation of the pump
and piping are constructed correctly. Rotational speed (min-1)
When vibration is large, please check the
centering of the pump, piping and loosening of the anchor bolt since they are considered to be
the cause.
(6) Check for loosening of the mounting bolts and the terminal screws for electrical wiring.
(7) Measure the insulation resistance of the motor once a month. Values over 1 MΩ are
adequate. However, in cases where the insulation resistance is over 1 MΩ but shows a
sharp decrease, there is probably some abnormality, and repair will be required.

2. Pump operation
Frequent start-stop operations damage the pump. Keep the following startup frequencies.

Motor output 7.5 kW or less 11 to 22 kW 30 kW or more

Startup frequency 6 times or less per hour 4 times or less per hour 3 times or less per hour

3. Prolonged stoppage and storage
(1) Run spare pumps, if any, from time to time to keep them ready for use.
(2) Rust will be formed on the packing after prolonged stoppage (three months or more) of the
pump. Before putting the pump back into use, detach and dry the packing, and then replace
it with grease applied. Also, pay attention to avoid rust on the finished surfaces of the bearing,
shaft, and shaft coupling.
(3) If the pump is to be out of use for a long time (three months or more), turn off the power.
(4) Before using the pump at the end of the prolonged stoppage (three months or more), carry out
the preparatory procedures (check and inspection) for installation.
