L I. LEARNING SKILL
After performing the activities in this activity sheet, I can perform
operations on rational numbers.
𝑎
A rational number is any number that can be written in the form , where 𝑎
𝑏
and 𝑏 are integers, and where 𝑏 ≠ 0 (𝑏 is not equal to 0).
Fractions and decimals are forms of rational numbers. This learning activity
sheet will help you in performing operations on fractions as decimals and decimals
as fractions.

MULTIPLICATION OF DECIMALS
To multiply decimals:
1. Multiply the numbers using the rules in multiplying whole numbers. Ignore first
the decimal points.
2. Count the total number of digits that are located at the right side of the
decimal points in the factors.
3. Locate the decimal point of the product by moving the decimal point of the
whole number to the left the number of times as the total number of digits in
step 2.
4. Insert zero as needed.
DIVISION OF FRACTIONS
To divide fractions, get the multiplicative inverse of the divisor then multiply
𝑎 𝑐 𝑎 𝑑
the two fractions. In symbols, ÷ = ∙ .
𝑏 𝑑 𝑏 𝑐
3
Example 11. Divide 2 by 4.
3 4
Solution: 2 ÷ 4 = 2 ∙ 3 Find the multiplicative inverse (reciprocal) of the
3
4 2 4 divisor , then multiply it to the dividend 2

B. Dividing a Decimal by Another Decimal Number
0.144 10
Multiply by to make the denominator a whole number.
2.5 10
0.144 10 1.44
• =
2.5 10 25
Divide 1.44 by 25
Adjusting the decimal point can also be done by moving the decimal point of
divisor to the right until it becomes a whole number, then move also the decimal
point of the dividend with the same number of places moved in the divisor.
Divisor: move the decimal point 1 place to the right , i.e. 2.5= 25
Dividend: move the decimal point 1 place to the right. i.e. 0.144= 1. 4 4
0.0576
25 1.4400
-125
Hence, 1.44 divided
190
by 25 is 0.0576
