- Designs a research project related to
daily life.

INTRODUCTION
RESEARCH TOPIC

A research subject is a topic or

concern a researcher needs while
carrying out research. The starting
point for a good research project is
a well-defined research subject. A
subject is an evolving mechanism in
which scientists discover, describe
their theories, and refine them.
3
RANGE OF RESEARCH TOPICS
IN THE AREA OF INQUIRY
• Research topics for qualitative investigation
range from simple to complex phenomenon
or case that need to be explored or
described.
• The richness and depth of data dictates the
choice of the researcher to conduct
research using a qualitative approach.
• Interest + Confidence
• Qualitative research topics are multi-
faceted. One aspect that may be explored is
the perceptions of individuals of certain
phenomenon or case.
4
THE SPECIFICITY AND FEASIBILITY OF
THE PROBLEM
• Specificity. This is usually referred to as
determining the research approach to
use in the conduct of the study.
• Feasibility. Apart from giving due
consideration of the time requirement
for conducting a qualitative investigation,
the researcher is also warned to
determine the capability of the research
method to accomplish the research
objectives.
5
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS IN
SELECTION:
• Relevance. It addresses the needs of the
target audience of the research paper.
• Interest. It should be appealing both to
your readers and to you as a researcher.
• Manageability. It can be explored within
your abilities and a certain time limit.
• Availability of resources. This refers to the
accessibility of financial resources,
references, and human resources required
or the completion of the research.
6
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS IN
SELECTION:

• Avoid overly recent topics.

• Avoid highly technical and
specialized topics.
• Refrain from choosing highly
sensitive or controversial
topics.

7
BROAD AND SPECIFIC TOPICS
• The following are examples of broad topics:
• Lack of Self-confidence
• Smoking Hazards
• Marketable Popular Garment Brand
• Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)

• The following are examples of specific topics:

• Lack of Self-confidence in Adolescents: Root
Causes, Manifestations and Intervention
• Health Hazards of Direct and Indirect
Smoking: Prevention and Cure
• Marketability of a Popular Garment Brand: A
Case Study
• HIV: Causes, Prevention, Treatment and Care

GUIDELINES COMMONLY USED IN
WRITING A QUALITATIVE
RESEARCH TITLE
1. It should be comprehensive.
2. It indicates the subject of the study as
well as its scope.
3. It stimulates the interest of the readers.
4. It utilizes the current taxonomy from the
field of study.

12
GUIDELINES COMMONLY USED IN
WRITING A QUALITATIVE RESEARCH
TITLE
5. It ignores redundant phrases or wasteful
words.
6. It may be crafted in declarative or
interrogative statement. (only for Qualitative)
7. It is written in ALL-CAPS case, bold face
8. The title can be crafted creatively. (on for
Qualitative)
9. It is written creatively satisfying the typical
function—to explore and/or explain a world
phenomenon, of a qualitative research.

13
FUNCTIONS OF A SUBTITLE

1. It provides explication or explanation.

Example: The Joy of Social Work Administration:
Human Service Administrators’ Positive
Perceptions of Their Work
2. It enhances a main title (oftentimes in direct
quote) which is literary, if not, imaginative.
Example: Design and Development of Electric
Motor Controller Trainer: An Instructional Device
3. It contextualizes the research.
Example: The Geopolitics of Eastern Border of the
European Union: The Case of Romania-Moldova-
Ukraine
14
FUNCTIONS OF A SUBTITLE

4. It describes the temporal or progressive

scope of the study.
Example: The Year-Two Decline: Exploring the
Incremental Experiences of a 1:1 Technology
Initiative.
5. It reflects or identifies the research method
or approach used.
Example: Finding the Groove: A Grounded
Theory Study on Leading Others to a
Productive Path.

THE INTRODUCTION

The introduction is very important in establishing the

cognitive setting of the research. It involves:
✓ discussing why there is a need to study the problem,
✓ clarifying the important terminologies for the reader to easily
understand what the research is about, and
✓ establishing the degree of seriousness of the problem which
has prompted the researcher to look for solutions.
✓ The background of the study establishes the context of the
research.
✓ This section explains why this research topic is important
and essential to understanding the main aspects of the
study.
✓ Usually, the background forms the first section of a
research article/thesis and justifies the need for conducting
the study and summarizes what the study aims to achieve.
Over the past decade, social media has drastically increased its breadth in terms of
the number of people who use it significantly. In fact, Facebook alone, as of January 2017
has reached a record high of approximately 1,850,000,000 active users as compared to 400
million in 2012 (Smith, 2017). This exponential increase in social media activity has fueled
the interest of various researchers on the effect of social media usage. Social media are
forms of electronic communication devices through which users create online communities
to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (Merriam-Webster, 2017).

Due to this, several studies have examined the effect of social media on student
academics (Matthews, 2014; Johnson & Johnson, 2016), its relationship with stress
(Santos, 2015; Chan, 2016), and attention span (Microsoft Corp., 2014; Jackson, 2016).

According to a study funded by Microsoft in 2014, people now generally lose

concentration after eight seconds, highlighting the effects of an increasingly digitalized
lifestyle on the brain. Attention span, as defined by Webster (2011) is the amount of
concentrated time a person can spend on a task without becoming distracted.
RESEARCH
GAP
RESEARCH GAP
• It refers to an issue or area in your field of
study that has yet to be addressed or
explored extensively.
• Considerations:
1. State that the current practices and
conventions in your field of study have not yet
addressed other areas related to the issue or
topic you are searching on.
2. State that these practices have failed to
provide conclusive findings regarding your topic.
3. Explain the need to address this issue or gap
you have identified.
4. Make sure that the research gap you
identified is relevant at present.
21
• Thus, in general, this study will be conducted in order to assess
the awareness, practice, and attitude towards the existing solid
waste management programs of the selected Grade VI Pupils of
elementary schools in Guagua. It also aims to measure the
effectiveness and current status of these implemented
programs. This study will serve as an eye opener for everyone to
value the importance of proper waste management. This is the
very reason why the researchers would like to probe this study.
22
• Social media is a very helpful tool of every people, indeed specially for those millennial people who are
so very fond of using social media, but knowingly that everything that is too much has huge impacts in
everyone's lives, and the researchers wants to know what are the possible impacts of social media that
might affect the social skills of those senior high school students who use social media excessively. That
is why this research came up. This study aims to assess the Relationship of Social Media usage on the
Social skills among Senior High Schools students, more specific on the Senior High School students of
Sto. Tomas National High School Sasmuan Pampanga, And Senior High School Students in Mary The
Queen College Pampanga, Inc. And to make the students aware about the impact of social media on
their social skills, that might affect their way of connecting or communicating with others in persona –
that can affect their everyday lives and unfortunately, their future. Also what remedies that the
schools, teachers, parents would do to make the students responsible enough to educe the use of
social media and to socialize personally, and communicate with each other in person and not in their
gadgets.
