The Impact of Artificial Intelligence Applications on Grade-12 Humanities and Social

Sciences Students in Eastern Cabu National High School, School Year 2024-2025

Chapter 1

Introduction

AI stands for Artificial Intelligence. It's a branch of computer science that focuses on creating

intelligent agents, which are systems that can reason, learn, and act autonomously.

Think of AI as a way to make computers think and learn like humans. It involves developing

algorithms and models that can analyze data, identify patterns, and make predictions. AI systems

are used in a wide range of applications, AI is a rapidly evolving field with immense potential to

transform various aspects of our lives.

This chapter includes the introduction, theoretical framework, statement of the problem,

hypothesis, scope and limitation, conceptual framework, significance of the study and the

definition of terms used.

Background of the problem

Artificial intelligence has become an important part of modern life that we can use for

our studies where we can find our answers to our questions about learning such as questions in

activities, tests, and quizzes. Artificial intelligence is an application that we can download in the

sating play store on the cellphone like ChatGPT, Cici, Meta Ai, Brainly Google, and etc,. It

helps to facilitate our work in finding answers to our questions at school, but it also has a bad

effect because many young people today are not Ai can be used properly or abused in its use,
because instead of just gathering some information, the students’ answers to their teacher are

usually only from Ai and students’ natural intelligence or thinking is not used. Especially only

makes most students lazy because they know they have applications to look forward to. Many

teachers today try to control students’ use of Ai applications by discouraging copying in Ai

applications for answers, but how can the use of Ai be controlled by students if the students do

not help themselves to avoid abusing its use? What effect will this conflict have on their

learning? How can its use be controlled?

AI literacy can be defined as a set of skills that enable a solid understanding of AI

through three priority axes: learning about AI, learning about how AI works, and learning for life

with AI (Long & Magerko, 2020; Miao et al., 2021). The first axis focuses on understanding AI

concepts and techniques to enable the recognition of which artifacts/platforms use AI and which

do not. The second axis addresses the understanding of how AI works, to effectively interact

with it. The third axis seeks to understand how AI can affect our lives, allowing us to critically

evaluate its technology. Thus, AI literacy goes beyond the use of AI applications in education,

such as Intelligent Tutoring Systems (ITS) (du Boulay, 2016).

According to Kandlhofer (2016), starting in the 1970s, AI began to emerge in

educational contexts through tools specifically designed to support learning, teaching, and the

management of educational institutions. Since many jobs are now AI-related and will continue to

increase in the coming years, some researchers believe that AI education should be considered as

important as literacy in reading and writing. However, teaching AI at the K-12 level is not yet

prevalent in formal settings and is considered challenging. Experts believe it is important to have

some thought on what AI education should look like at the K-12 level so that future generations
can become informed citizens who understand the technologies they interact with in their daily

lives (Touretzky et al., 2019a).

The huge impact that AI is having on our lives, at work and in every type of organization and

business sector is easily recognizable today. No one doubts that AI is one of the most disruptive

technologies in history, if not the most. In recent years, the expectations generated by AI, far

from being deflated, have only grown. We are still a long way from general-purpose AI, but the

application of AI to solve real problems has already taken hold for a wide range of purposes. It is

therefore necessary for young people to know how AI works, as this learning will make it easier

for them to use these technologies in their daily lives, both to learn and to interact with others.

Like any other technology, the potential uses and abuses of AI go hand in hand with its

disruptive capacity. Many social groups and governments are expressing concern about the

possible negative consequences of AI misuse. Although it is crucial to adequately regulate the

use of AI, education is as important, if not more important, than regulation. Everything, whether

good or bad, stems from the education received. Thus, education systems must prepare students

for a society in which they will have to live and interact with AI. AI education will enable young

people to discover how these tools work and, consequently, to act responsibly and critically.

Therefore, AI literacy has become a relevant and strategic issue (Chiu & Chai, 2020). This

systematic review has focused on analyzing AI teaching–learning proposals in K-12 globally.

Nowadays Ai application is not properly used, we often abuse its use by copying. The ai

application has a great contribution to our studies because here we can learn, get information and

ideas, so we did this study to inform students especially in ECNHS about its negative and

positive effects, as well as its proper use to avoid plagiarism.

Theoretical Framework

This study is supported by the theory of the three models on how its can affect on the

learners by (https://bera-journals.onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/bjet.13341) AI can make

the bad worse or the good better and must be used with that understanding in mind. All tools and

artefacts with the power to enhance human potential mediate the intentions of the people

employing them. For example, steam engines and later oil and gas burning engines, reduced

labor costs for moving vast quantities of earth and made building enormous dams and cities

possible. However, they also led to displacements, injuries and unemployment. AI in education

is undoubtedly a double-edged sword that can lead to unintended consequences and will likely

cause a rethinking of many assumptions about learning, knowledge, skill, performance, creativity

and innovation. Critical to its positive use is the intention of whoever wields power, with

appropriate caution and watchfulness for consequential impacts. Acknowledging the need for

critical review, here we offer a new synthesis framework for thinking about AI at (1) micro level,

as a partner in exploration, learning and expression by an individual, (2) meso level, as a

creative, collaborative group member in team activities and (3) macro level, as a mediator as

well as the initiator of cultural shifts. These roles are possible because AI in education is

changing what it means to ‘know and do’ in concert with intelligent computational resources.

This is the principle according to Hill (2022), the AI agent may be responsible for most of the

‘work’ in these activities. These developments call into question longstanding assumptions about

learning. Should a higher education faculty grant a degree to someone using such a system?

Should an employer hire a graduate based on what they know and know how to do—with or

without AI? Would either of these cases be an example of a potential unfair practice or
‘cheating?’ On the other hand, what should happen if a student gets identified for cheating by an

algorithm and an anonymous professor? They discuss five gaps (ie, access, representation,

algorithms, interpretation and citizenship) that must be watched as AI is used in education. In

addition to the potential harms, educators considering AI may also be vulnerable to the over-

hyped potentials and pitfalls of AI in education—‘AI theatre’ according to Selwyn (2022),

Artificial intelligence is changing education through personalized lessons and automated

grading. The benefits are include efficiency, improving educational outcomes, and customizing

it, the teachers are still important because AI tools can’t do everything humans can. In the future,

educators will probably use AI to help them teach (https://afaeducation.org/blog/ai-and-
