Problem statement:

Develop a suitable system tailored for use in

automotive service stations, capable of efficiently lifting
vehicles, including those with low ground clearance,
with a maximum load capacity of 3 tons. The system
must achieve a sufficient lift height to enable
comprehensive access for maintenance tasks. The
specifications and requirements are as given below.
Assume suitable data required if any

Specifications:
1. Type of service station: automobile repair shop
2. Type of vehicle: Maruti 800 , Nano , SUV
3. Lifting capacity :
Minimum: 100kg
Maximum: 3 tones
4. Number of wheels to be lifted: 2 wheels
5. Ground clearance requirement:
Minimum: 125mm
Maximum: 225mm
Introduction to Car Jack :
A car jack is a mechanical device for lifting heavy loads
(e.g. your car) or applying great force. Car jacks
generally fall into one of two categories—mechanical or
hydraulic.
 Mechanical jack : Mechanical jacks use
physical means, such as a hand-operated lever or
motor, to lift or lower a vehicle and will
automatically lock in place once force or power is
removed.
 Hydraulic jack : Hydraulic jacks on the other
hand, use pistons and an incompressible liquid to
create pressure—otherwise known as hydraulic
power—in a hydraulic cylinder; this pressure is
then used to lift heavy objects.

 Why Hydraulic Systems Are More Efficient

Than Mechanical Systems for Car Jacks?
 Less Manual Effort:
 Hydraulic: Transmits force with minimal manual
effort due to Pascal's Law, allowing for lifting heavy
loads with ease.
 Mechanical: Requires more physical effort, as
mechanical systems often involve gears or levers
that need significant force to lift heavy loads.
 Higher Load Capacity:
 Hydraulic: Capable of lifting heavier loads with
less physical effort due to the ability to generate
high force with small input.
 Mechanical: Limited by the strength of
mechanical components and the amount of force a
person can apply manually.
 Smooth Operation:
 Hydraulic: Provides a smooth and controlled
lifting process, which helps in precise positioning of
the load.
 Mechanical: Can be less smooth due to the
mechanical friction and complexity of gear
interactions.
 Compact Design:
 Hydraulic: Can achieve high lifting capacity in a
more compact design compared to mechanical
systems.
 Mechanical: Often requires larger, more complex
designs to achieve similar lifting capacities.
 Reduced Wear and Tear:
 Hydraulic: Less wear on components due to the
fluid's ability to distribute forces evenly.
 Mechanical: Increased wear and tear on gears,
levers, and other moving parts due to friction and
mechanical stress.
 Higher Efficiency:
 Hydraulic: Generally more efficient at converting
input force into lifting force, as hydraulic systems
are less prone to energy loss compared to
mechanical systems.
 Less Maintenance:
 Hydraulic: Fewer moving parts mean lower
maintenance requirements and fewer chances of
mechanical failure.
 Mechanical: More moving parts can lead to higher
maintenance needs and potential for mechanical
breakdowns.
Types of Hydraulic Jacks:

 Bottle Jack:
 Description: A compact, vertical hydraulic jack
designed for lifting high-clearance vehicles. It has a
high lifting capacity but requires more clearance to
operate compared to other types.
 Floor Jack:
 Description: A horizontal hydraulic jack with
wheels, ideal for low-clearance vehicles and
commonly used in service stations for its ease of
positioning and stability. It features a long handle
for smooth and controlled lifting.
 Scissor Jack with Hydraulic Assist:
 Description: Combines a scissor jack mechanism
with hydraulic assistance to lift vehicles with
reduced manual effort. It is compact and often
used for light vehicles, offering a balance between
manual and hydraulic operation.
 High-Lift Jack:
 Description: A versatile jack designed for off-road
use, capable of lifting vehicles and other heavy
loads to great heights. It uses a ratchet mechanism
combined with hydraulic power to achieve its high
lift capability.
 Air/Hydraulic Jack:
 Description: Uses compressed air to assist in
lifting, combined with hydraulic action for smooth
and rapid operation. It is typically used in
professional environments where speed and
efficiency are crucial.
Selected Mechanism:
Floor Car Jack:
A floor car jack is a hydraulic lifting device designed to
lift vehicles with low ground clearance. It features a
horizontal design with a large, stable base and wheels,
allowing it to be easily maneuvered under a vehicle.
The jack operates with a long handle that, when
pumped, activates the hydraulic system to raise the
vehicle smoothly and efficiently. Its low-profile design
ensures compatibility with most vehicles, and its stable
base provides safety during lifting, making it a popular
choice in automotive service stations and workshops.

Why floor car jack is more efficient than other hydraulic

car jack??
1. Low Clearance Compatibility: Floor jacks have a
low profile, making them ideal for lifting vehicles with
minimal ground clearance.
2. Ease of Maneuverability: Equipped with wheels,
they are easy to position and adjust under the vehicle.
3. Stability: The wide base provides excellent stability
during lifting, reducing the risk of tipping.
4. Controlled Lifting: Features a long handle for
smooth, precise control of the lifting process.
5. Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of vehicle
types and maintenance tasks, from tire changes to
suspension work.
