Course Description

This course examines the business functions of Management in an organizational setting. Students will learn how managers deliver value in planning,
organizing, leading and controlling the organization such that the employees are always highly motivated to best serve their managers by yielding high
work output and efficient performance. Topics include evolution of management, decision making, strategic management, organizational design and
team work. Management principles will be applied to specific real or created situations.

1 Understand and memorize the basic concepts and theories of management
while recognizing the significance of its functions and practices in an 

used to improve the management processes in efficient and effective ways.  

Teaching & Learning Methodology
To make the teaching heuristic, our class room sessions will be based on lectures, group activities, role plays, case studies, article presentations, team
activities and group discussions. Students are expected to participate positively in all such activities. Most of the activities will be considered as
marked assignments. Please be advised that the contents on the slides are only to stimulate your memory. You are expected to have gone through the
subject matter (designated chapter from the prescribed course book as well as additional reading from other sources) in advance of scheduled lecture
with a view to have positive interaction during the Class.

Guidelines – Final Group Projects

The project is meant to enhance the ability of each individual to work as a team player and for groups as a whole to develop the
analytical and cognitive ability. The Project will serve as a learning curve where the students merge the theoretical concepts with
practical implementation as seen by the practices of the local market leaders. Students will select any organization whose practices
they will study according to the theoretical concepts studied in the class. The instructor will allocate the topics to be studied by each
group. The groups need to:

 Study the concept.


 Study the practice of that specific topic in the organization.
 Highlight key elements that give the organization a competitive edge.
 How can the organization build on its strengths in that particular domain?
 Recommendations on what else should the organization do that it is not doing based on the SWOT related to that particular
domain.
 Each group member must play his/ her role in the project.
 Project report must show collective effort of the group.
 Group must present the overview, findings and methodology in the second last week of the semester.

METHODOLOGY

The methodology of the project is detailed below:


 For final project, students are required to visit and interview a manager from the corporate sector such as Telecom, Banking, IT
or Products/services producing industries. The questionnaire for interview is to be based on researched work related to all
dimensions of management that has been mentioned or taught in class.
 Collect at least two good articles (dependent on the size of the group) related to management and practices. The purpose of this
research work is to help you develop questions for the interview.
 Prepare 15 to 20 interview questions with the help of these articles.
 Various tools, such as, interviews, questionnaires, observation etc can be used.

REPORT (APPROX 2500 WORDS EXCLUDING ANNEXURE AND SYNOPSIS)

The report should be word processed with 1.5-line spacing. Page numbers should be located in footer (centred) and should contain the
following elements:

 Title page bearing:

o The full title of the report


o Group members’ names & Enrolment Nos.
o The date

 Table of Contents
 Synopsis of articles
 Brief of the organization
 Analysis- the most important part of your report and presentation in which you are required to analyse the management practices
of your selected organization in the light of concepts you learned and given in your course book.
 Conclusion – This will detail what students have learned from this project and finally you give the recommendation for any
change in their management practices/polices or adoption of any proven practice/practices for improvement.
 Annexure (List of interview questions and answers and articles that you have summarized are to be attached in this section)

PRESENTATION
 The presentation will be given on multimedia using power point or prezi.
 The students are required to dress up formally.
 Each group should comprise of 4 to 5 members.
 15 minutes will be given to each group. Each individual will be given maximum of 3 and minimum of 2 minutes. Group exceeding
their time limit will be marked negatively.
 Maximum of 2 minutes will be given to each group for question-answer session from the audience.
 Students will be marked on:
o Nonverbal – confidence, dressing, eye contact, body language and overall attitude.
o Content – It should reflect your effort and the slides should be relevant, innovative and interesting while maintaining quality.
 Speech - Audibility, intonation, liveliness and clarity of speech.
 Confidence and fluency in use of English.

Submission Deadline:

 Written Reports are to be submitted one week before the presentations


 Presentations will be held during the second last week of semester prior final examination.
 Late submission of report will be subject to 10% deduction in marks.

Note: Total Marks for the project will be 20, comprising of 40% marks for group effort (report) and 60% for individual
presentation.

WRITTEN ASSIGNMENTS - CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF CASE STUDY / ARTICLE FOLLOWED BY DISCUSSION /


PRESENTATIONS BY CLASS / GROUPS

 Students would be required to choose latest and relevant articles/case studies.


 The article should be of at least 3-4 pages.
 The students will be graded on the quality of material selected/presented, analytical quality, innovative techniques used and
personal presentation style.
 HBR articles are preferred. Contact the librarian for the required web link.
 At the end of each presentation, the group will entertain questions from the class.

All the written assignments should be:

 Neatly typed on A4 size paper


 Having Arial font, size 12, line spacing 1.5
 Having assignment number, title, name, enrolment number and submission date printed in bold on front page.

 Be punctual and maintain good conduct in class

 Don’t make inappropriate gestures
 Avoid gender discrimination and sexual harassment
 Maintain cordial working relations with students and teachers
 Maintain good CGPA but don’t forget to be a good human being

Class room policy for the students:

 Please plan to have read all the chapter material prior coming to the classes. Having read these chapters before will help you
keep up with the class.

 Students are advised to be punctual and regular. Attendance will be marked twice – in first 10 minutes of the class as well as
after the break.

 Late comers will be marked absent.

 Assignments must be submitted on the due date before the start of class.

 Late submission of assignments will not be acceptable.

 Please avoid plagiarism. Original work will be appreciated.


 I will take announced or surprised quizzes and issue a number of assignments and case studies. Best 04 quizzes and 03
assignments will be considered for final grading.

 Please come prepared for next day lecture.

 Think as a “manager” in the class discussions

 Students must come to the class with a “learning” objective.

 Must carry relevant course books, registers/notebooks and pen etc.

 Mobile phones are to be switched off in the class.

 Please wear your student ID cards.

 Eatables including chewing gums are not allowed in the class

 Keep your classroom clean and avoid littering.

 Maintain a working relationship among entire class fellows and refrain from sexual harassment and discrimination on the basis of
cast, creed, religion and cultural background.

 If your attendance in the class is below 75%, you will be graded “F” and you will not be allowed to appear in the Final
Examination.

PIECE OF ADVICE:

I would urge that all students should be regular in classes, work hard and dress up nicely with neat & clean turnout as per the dress
code. Always try to participate in class discussions and be interactive. You should utilize the University’s resources to achieve
yourself established goals towards academic excellence. I appreciate the original work and candid opinions with unbiased
approaches. Develop a habit of reading business related books and articles. You are welcome to visit my office in time slots displayed
on the office door for guidance or clarification of queries regarding the course work.
Note:-
 Student’s preparations for case studies and participation in discussions can be selectively taken as their assignments for
grading.
 Class activities would predominantly include discussions, developing role models by the students, presentations by student
groups and case studies.
 Minor deviations from the schedule above should be expected.
