About Us

The Karnataka Vidyuth Karkhane Limited , a fully owned Government of Karnataka undertaking, is the successor to the Government Electric Factory, the first ever manufacturer of electrical transformers in the country , established way back in 1933 by the erstwhile Maharaja of Mysore.

Today, after six decades of successful operations, KAVIKA has emerged as a renowned name for Distribution Transformers in the range of 25 KVA to 500 KVA up to 11 kV Class as well as for custom built / special type transformers as per specific requirements

Electric factory, which was established in the year 1933, the oldest transformer industry in the country and fully owned by the government of Karnataka. In the year 1976, when there was industrial boom in the country and also in Karnataka, to give independent administrative set up to facilitate up gradation of manufacturing activities by adopting latest technology, the company, KAVIKA was formed. The company entered into technical collaboration with world renowned M/s. Westinghouse Electric Corporation, USA, to upgrade the transformer technology and to manufacture completely self protected (CSP) transformer. Our engineers were trained in this corporation to adopt their technical know-how in the manufacture of transformers. The company is manufacturing Distribution & power transformer ranging from 15 KVA to 1600 KVA, 22 KV class. Presently, the company is manufacturing transformers ranging from 25 KVA to 500 KVA, which are in demand. The company is in the line of manufacture of distribution & power transformers since more than six decade. It is having qualified engineers, supervisors, technicians and various other supporting staff/employees who have put in number of year of services and capable of manufacturing good quality transformers.

The company is known for quality transforms. The company has designed, developed and manufactured special type of transformers like, completely self protected transformers, single phase transformers and booster transformers. The company has a capacity to manufacture 20,000 transformers every year. It also manufactured and supplied single phase transformer of capacity 5,10,15 and 25 KVA 6.35 KV/230-460 V to APESB during 1982-83 for their new single phase distribution system, where individual customer were provided with transformers which would reduce the line losses substantially.

Manufacturing design:
The company is at present using the latest computerized design and drawing to achieve the high standards applicable and the company is technically superior to other competitors in the market. The design department is headed by a qualified, experienced manager with over twenty years of experience in the design field being specifically trained and assisted by qualified engineers.

Quality:
The secret behind the popularity of KAVIKA transformers is the strict adherence to quality norms, at every stage of manufacture. Starting from the prime quality CRGO coils and other indigenous raw materials, the product goes through strict quality check at every stage to ensure that only the best come out of the factory to reach a select band of customers, across the country.

Industry is having sophisticated equipment for fabrication as well as assembly of transformers and also the company is having Raw material testing laboratory and final product testing laboratory which meets the IS(Indian standards ) standards. The company is having computer network of LAN in order to know the day to day activities of production, inventory and finance position (MIS).

Training all employees on environmental awareness to enable implementation of the Environmental policy.

Future growth and prospects:


The manufacturing and distribution of transformers, which is now practically the only product of this unit, suffers from a serious competition from all small scale manufacturing and the profits have lowered. Therefore it was considered necessary that other product, which can give substantial increase in production and assured reasonable profits are to be taken up by the company in addition to transformers. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Power and distribution transformers up to 3000 KVA, 33 KV. Completely self protected transformers up 315 KVA, 11 KV. C.S.P oil immersed circuit breaker for use in completely self- protected transformers. Low voltage (LV) distribution boxes. High voltage (HV) metering cubicles.

Modernization and diversification:


During the year 1993-1994 the company has installed a plant for manufacture of aluminium conductors for captive consumption, besides commissioning wire drawing plant, radical drilling machine, pollution control equipment, to make the work spot environment friendly. The company had installed an annealing furnace costing about Rs.20laks for reducing the core loss in the lamination, which results in the reduction in weight of the core material, thereby reducing the cost of the transformers. The time bound programmers on computerization, starting from design of product is continuing satisfactorily.

PARTICULARS OF EMPLOYEES UNDER SECTION 217(2A):


During the year under report, no employee of the company was in receipt either for the whole year or part thereof remuneration in excess of Rs. 5 lakhs per month or Rs. 50 lakhs per annum the limits specified under section 217 (2A) of the companies act, 1956 and rules framed there under.

PERSONNEL:
As on 31st march 2011, the strength of the permanent employees was 211 as compared to 212 employees on 31.03.2010.

INDUSTRIAL RELATIONS:
During the year under Report, the relationship between the management and the labour union was cordial.

DIRCETOR RESPONSIBILITY STATEMENT:


Pursuant to the requirements under section 217 (2AA) of the companies Act, 1956, the board of Directors of the company hereby state and confirm that: 1.In the preparation of the annual accounts, the applicable accounting standards have been followed along with proper explanation relating to material departures. 2.The directors have selected accounting policies and applied them consistently and made judgments and estimates that are reasonable and prudent so as to give a true and fair view of the state of affairs of the company at the end of the financial year and of the profit of the company for the year under review. 3.The Directors have taken proper and sufficient care for the maintenance of adequate accounting records in accordance with the provisions of the companies Act, 1956 for safeguarding the assets of the company and for preventing and detecting fraud and other irregularities. 4.The Directors have arranged preparation of accounts for the financial year ended March 31, 2011 as a going concern basis.

AUDIT COMMITTEE:
As required under section 292-A of the companies act 1956, the board has constituted the AUDIT COMMITTEE. The audit committee has met 2 times during 2010-2011 to peruse the accounts of the company and Board of Directors have been appraised about the observations of the committee.

STATUTORY AUDITORS:
The comptroller and Auditor General of India has appointed m/s. Rajesh & Jayasimha Chartered Accountants, No. 414, 41st cross, 7th Main, 5th block, Jayanagar, Bangalore-41 as the statutory Auditors for the financial year 2010-2011 in accordance with section 619 of the companies Act, 1956.

MEASURES TAKEN TO CONSERVE ENERGY


1. 2. 3. 4. Contract demand has been reduced from 500 to 300 KVA for saving demand charges. LT Power supply has been surrendered to KPTCL for effecting cost savings. Solar water heater has been installed at Factory canteen to save power. The vacuum drying Chamber is run only when there is full charge and is not run till the full charge becomes ready to save energy. 5. 6. Fan and Lights are used only sparingly. We have installed recently 5 kV solar power units to administration building. The above measures have resulted in cost reduction to the tune of approx. Rs. 35,000/-
