Submitted by: Kalpana Gupta

Subject: Business Law

Date of Submission: February 2025

Acknowledgment

I express my sincere gratitude to my professor and my institution for guiding me through this

project on 'Right to Consumer.' Their support and insights have been instrumental in

completing this work successfully.

Introduction

Consumer rights are essential for protecting buyers from unfair practices. This project explores

consumer protection laws, their significance, and how they impact everyday transactions.
Meaning and Importance of Consumer Rights

A consumer is any person who buys goods or services for personal use. Consumer rights

ensure fair trade, safety, and quality, preventing exploitation by sellers.

Consumer Rights in India (Consumer Protection Act, 2019)

1. Right to Safety - Protection from hazardous goods.

2. Right to Information - Accurate details on products.

3. Right to Choose - Access to a variety of goods/services.

4. Right to Be Heard - Consideration of consumer complaints.

5. Right to Seek Redressal - Legal action against unfair practices.

6. Right to Consumer Education - Awareness about rights.

Consumer Protection Act, 2019

The Consumer Protection Act, 2019, strengthens consumer rights by addressing e-commerce

transactions, introducing the Central Consumer Protection Authority (CCPA), and streamlining

complaint redressal.
Consumer Courts and Complaint Filing Process

Consumers can approach:

- District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

- State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

- National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission.

A complaint can be filed online or offline with necessary proof of unfair trade practices.
Role of Government and NGOs

Government initiatives like 'Jago Grahak Jago' raise awareness. NGOs play a crucial role in

educating consumers and providing legal assistance.

Challenges in Consumer Protection

Despite strong laws, challenges like lack of awareness, legal delays, and misleading

advertisements hinder consumer protection. The rise of e-commerce adds new complexities.
Conclusion and Suggestions

Strict enforcement of laws, consumer education, and active participation from the public are

essential for effective consumer protection. Consumers must stay informed and exercise their

rights.
