How to Frame a Problem to Find the Right Solutions

The article How To Frame a Problem To Find The Right Solution by Paloma Cantero-

Gomez discusses how the way we define a problem affects the solutions we come up with. The

author explains that if we do not frame a problem properly, we might end up focusing on the

wrong issues or finding ineffective solutions. This idea made me realize that problem-solving is

not just about finding answers but also about asking the right questions.

One of the techniques mentioned in the article is the 40-20-10-5 Rule, where a problem

is written in 40 words and then reduced step by step to just five words. This method helps in

identifying the core issue. I found this very useful because sometimes, when we are faced with

a problem, we get overwhelmed by unnecessary details. By simplifying the problem, we can

focus on what really matters and find a better solution.

Another important point in the article is the idea of challenging assumptions. Often, we

assume that we already know the cause of a problem without questioning it. This can limit our

ability to think critically. The article suggests that we should take a step back and consider

different perspectives. I believe this is very helpful, especially in group projects where everyone

has different opinions. Instead of immediately rejecting an idea, it is better to ask, "What if this

assumption is wrong?" This way, we can explore new possibilities.

The article also emphasizes the importance of using positive language when framing

problems. Instead of looking at a situation negatively, it helps to rephrase it in a way that

encourages problem-solving. For example, instead of saying, "This is too difficult," we can ask,

"How can we make this easier?" This small change in wording can help reduce stress and

motivate us to think more creatively.

Lastly, the SCAMPER rule (Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, put to other uses,

Eliminate, Rearrange) is a creative way to look at problems from different angles. This

technique can be useful not only in academic settings but also in real-life situations. It

encourages us to think outside the box and not settle for the first solution that comes to mind.

After reading this article, I realized that problem framing is an important skill that can

help in many aspects of life. Whether in school, work, or personal situations, taking the time to

properly define a problem can lead to better solutions. Instead of rushing to fix something, I will

try to analyze the problem carefully and use some of the techniques mentioned in the article. I

believe that by improving the way I frame problems, I can also improve the way I solve them.
