ELECTRICAL MACHINES MODEL QUESTION PAPER III Time: 3 Hours Maximum Marks: 100
Instructions to students: Answer Five full questions. Marks CO RBT
Level a) Give the detailed classification of DC generators with circuit diagrams 10 CO1 L1 & 1. and equations for induced emf in terms of circuit parameters. L2 b) A 5 kVA, 500/250 V, 50 Hz, single phase transformer gave the 10 CO1 L3 following readings, O.C. Test: 500 V, 1 A, 50 W (H.V. side open) S.C. Test: 25 V, 10 A, 60 W (L.V. side shorted) (i) The efficiency on full load, 0.8 lagging p.f. (ii) The efficiency on 60% of full load, 0.8 leading p.f. (iii) draw the equivalent circuit referred to primary side and insert all the values in it. OR a) Explain sumpner’s test with circuit diagram. Therefrom show how 10 CO1 L1 & 2. efficiency can be calculated. L2 b) A 33kVA, 2200/220V, 50Hz, single phase transformer has the 10 CO1 L3 following parameters: H.V side: resistance = 2.4Ω; reactance = 6.0Ω L.V side: resistance = 0.03Ω; reactance = 0.07Ω (i) Find the equivalent resistance and equivalent reactance referred to (i) primary and (ii) Secondary. (ii) Calculate the total ohmic loss at full load. (iii) Calculate the voltage to be applied to the H.V side in order to obtain a short circuit current of 160A in the L.V winding. Under these conditions find the power input also. 3 a) Show that when a 3-phase supply is given to a 3-phase winding of the 10 CO2 L2 induction motor, a rotating magnetic field of constant magnitude is produced. Hence explain the working of a three phase induction motor. b) A 415 V, 29.84 KW ,50Hz ,delta connected motor gave the following 10 CO2 L3 test data; No load : 415V, 21A, 1250W Blocked rotor: 100V, 45A, 2730W. Construct the circle diagram and determine 1) line current and PF for rated output 2) maximum torque. Assume stator and rotor copper loss are equal at standstill. OR 4. a) Explain the statement “An induction motor is a rotating transformer” 10 CO2 L2 with relevant comparisons. b) A 3-phase, 6-pole, 50Hz induction motor takes 60A at full load speed 10 CO2 L3 of 940 r.p.m and develops a torque of 150 N-m. The starting current at rated voltage is 300A. What is the starting torque? If a star/delta starter is used, determine the starting torque and starting current. 5. a) Mention the methods to control the speed of an induction motor. 10 CO3 L2 Explain the v/f method of speed control of induction motor. b) A 24 pole 50 Hz star connected induction motor has rotor resistance of 10 CO3 L3 0.016 Ω per phase and rotor reactance of 0.265 Ω per phase at standstill. It is achieving its full load torque at a speed of 247 rpm. Calculate the ratio of i) full load torque to maximum torque ii) starting torque to maximum torque OR 6. a) With usual notations, develop the electrical equivalent circuit of a 10 CO3 L2 three phase induction motor connected to a mechanical load. b) Give a relative comparison between the types of starting of three 10 CO3 L2 phase induction motors with respect to starting torque and full load torque. 7. a) Explain the double field revolving theory as applied to single phase 10 CO4 L2 induction motors. b) Explain the working of a BLDC motor. Mention its advantages and 10 CO4 L2 applications. OR 8. a) With a circuit diagram, explain the operation of a capacitor start single 10 CO4 L2 phase induction motor. What precautions are to be taken while employing capacitor start single phase induction motor. Mention at least four applications of this motor. b) Explain the performance characteristics, advantages, disadvantages 10 CO4 L2 and applications of permanent magnet DC motor 9. a) Explain ‘V’ and inverted ‘V’ curves of synchronous motors. 10 CO5 L2 b) Two single phase alternator operating in parallel have induced emf’s 10 CO5 L3 on open circuit 230∟00 and 230 ∟100 volts and reactance of j2 Ω and j3 Ω respectively .Calculate i) terminal voltage ii) current iii) power delivered by each of the alternator to a load of resistance of 6 Ω . OR 10. a) Explain ASA method of determining the voltage regulation of an 10 CO5 L2 alternator. b) A 10 pole, 50Hz, 600rpm alternator has flux density distribution given 10 CO5 L3 by the expression B = sinθ + 0.4sin3θ + 0.2sin5θ. The alternator has 180 slots wound with 2 layer 3 turn coils having a span of 15 slots. The coils are connected in 60° groups. If armature diameter is 1.2m and core length 0.4m, calculate the instantaneous emf/conductor.
