Week 1: Introduction to Past Continuous
1. Introduction to the Past Continuous Tense
Form
The Past Continuous tense is formed using: was/were + verb (-ing)

Affirmative Form:
• I was studying.
• They were playing football.

Negative Form:
• She was not (wasn't) watching TV.
• We were not (weren't) listening to music.

Interrogative Form:
• Was he sleeping?
• Were you working?

Usage
We use the Past Continuous tense to describe:
1. An action in progress at a specific time in the past:
• At 7 PM, I was cooking dinner.
2. Two actions happening at the same time in the past:
• While I was reading, my sister was listening to music.
3. An interrupted action in the past:
• I was watching TV when the phone rang.

2. Past Continuous vs. Past Simple (Basic Comparison)

The Past Simple is used for completed actions, while the Past Continuous describes an ongoing
action in the past.

Past Simple Past Continuous

She left the house. She was leaving the house when I arrived.
They ate lunch. They were eating lunch at 2 PM.

Complete the sentences using the correct form of the Past Continuous.
1. I was watching (watch) TV when my mom called me.
2. They were playing (play) football at 3 PM.
3. She was not (wasn't) reading (not/read) a book when you saw her.
4. What were you doing (do) at 10 AM yesterday?
5. While we were walking (walk) to school, it started to rain.

Exercise 2: Create Sentences

Write sentences using the Past Continuous:
1. (She / cook / when I arrived) She was cooking when I arrived.
2. (They / dance / while the music played) They were dancing while the music played.
3. (He / not listen / to music at 9 PM) He was not (wasn't) listening to music at 9 PM.

Work with a partner. One person starts a story using the Past Continuous, and the other continues.
Example:

• Person B: "...I saw a strange dog following me. It was barking loudly while..."
• Persona A: "Yesterday at 8 PM, I was studying in my room when..."
• (Ayer a las 8 PM, yo estaba estudiando en mi habitación cuando...)
• Persona B: "...I heard a loud noise outside. The wind was blowing strongly while..."
(...escuché un ruido fuerte afuera. El viento estaba soplando con fuerza mientras...)
• Persona A: "...the trees were shaking. I was looking through the window when suddenly..."
(...los árboles se estaban sacudiendo. Yo estaba mirando por la ventana cuando de repente...)
• Persona B: "...the lights went out. Everything was dark, and I was trying to find a flashlight
when..."
(...las luces se apagaron. Todo estaba oscuro, y yo estaba tratando de encontrar una linterna
cuando...)
• Persona A: "...I heard footsteps in the hallway. I was feeling scared while..."
(...escuché pasos en el pasillo. Me estaba sintiendo asustado mientras...)
• Persona B: "...my cat was meowing loudly. It was just the cat, but it scared me a lot!"
