compared to a diffraction 10-4 slits/cm? (2 Marks)
5- Why only E. Field vector is considered in polarization and not M. Field vector? (2 Marks)

1- Light of wavelength 550 nm is incident on a slit having a width of 0.2mm, the viewing
screen is 2 m from the slit. Find the positions of the first dark fringes and the width of the
central bright fringe. (4 Marks)

2- The critical angle for total internal reflection at a boundary between two materials is 50°.
What is Brewster’s angle at this boundary? Give two answers, one for each material.

3- A soap film has an index of refraction n = 1.32. The film is illuminated normally by light of
wavelength λ = 445 nm. (a) What is the smallest thickness of the film that it will appear
black? (b) Why would the film also appear black if the film thickness is much less than the
wavelength? (4 Marks)

4- Unpolarized light passes through two Polaroid, the axis of the first is vertical and that of
the second is at 45° to the vertical. Describe the orientation and intensity of the transmitted
light. (4 Marks)
