Exploring Amplitude and Period of Sine/Cosine

Directions: Use a graphing calculator to explore sine and cosine and answer the questions below.
Use your academic language!

Calculator Setup:
 Mode: radian
 X-scale: [−2𝜋. , 2𝜋]
 Y-scale: [−5, 5]

Student Activity 1 – Exploring Amplitude

1. Graph 𝑦 = sin 𝑥 and 𝑦 = 2sin 𝑥. How does the graph of 𝑦 = 2sin 𝑥 differ from the graph of 𝑦 =
sin 𝑥?

2. Delete the graph of 𝑦 = 2sin 𝑥 and graph 𝑦 = 0.5sin 𝑥. How does the graph of 𝑦 = 0.5sin 𝑥 differ
from the graph of 𝑦 = sin 𝑥?

3. Delete the graph of 𝑦 = 0.5sin 𝑥 and graph 𝑦 = −sin 𝑥. How does the graph of 𝑦 = −sin 𝑥 differ
from the graph of 𝑦 = sin 𝑥?

4. Delete the graph of 𝑦 = −sin 𝑥 and graph 𝑦 = Asin 𝑥, letting “A” vary from -5 to 5. What effect
does “A” have on the graphs?

5. Repeat steps 1-4 above replacing sine with cosine. Does the graph of 𝑦 = Acos 𝑥 react to the
values of “A” the same way 𝑦 = Asin 𝑥 did?

Making sense of amplitude. (use math vocabulary in your descriptions)

1. Answer the following questions about equations in the forms y = Asinx and y = Acosx:

a) What happens to the graph of y = sinx and y = cosx when A > 1?

b) What happens when 0 < A < 1?
c) When -1 < A < 0?
d) What about when A = -1?
e) And when A < -1?

2. Define amplitude:

3. By only looking at the equations in the form y = Asinx or y = Acosx (and not graphing), can
you write an expression that gives the amplitude of the graph?

4. By only looking at the graphs of the equations in the form y = Asinx or y = Acosx (and not
knowing the exact equation), can you write an expression that gives the amplitude of the
graph?
Student Activity 2 – Exploring Period

1. Graph 𝑦 = cos 𝑥 and 𝑦 = cos 2𝑥. How does the graph of 𝑦 = cos 2𝑥 differ from the graph of 𝑦 =
cos 𝑥?

2. Delete the graph of 𝑦 = cos 2𝑥 and graph 𝑦 = cos 0.5𝑥. How does the graph of 𝑦 = cos 0.5𝑥differ
from the graph of 𝑦 = cos 𝑥?

3. Delete the graph of 𝑦 = cos 0.5𝑥 and graph 𝑦 = cos(−𝑥). How does the graph of 𝑦 = cos(−𝑥).
differ from the graph of 𝑦 = cos 𝑥?

4. Delete the graph of 𝑦 = cos(−𝑥) and graph 𝑦 = cos 𝐵𝑥, letting “B” vary from -5 to 5. What effect
does “B” have on the graphs?

5. Repeat steps 1-4 above replacing cosine with sine. Does the graph of 𝑦 = sin 𝐵𝑥 react to the
values of “B” the same way 𝑦 = cos 𝐵𝑥 did?

Making sense of period. (use math vocabulary in your descriptions)

1. Answer the following questions about equations in the forms y = sinBx and y = cosBx:

a) What happens to the graphs of y = sinx and y = cosx when B > 1?

b) What happens when 0 < B < 1?

c) When -1 < B < 0? Be careful!!

d) What about when B = -1? Be careful!!

e) And when B < -1? Be careful!!

2. Define period.

3. By only looking at the equations in the form y = sinBx or y = cosBx (and not graphing), can
you write an expression that gives the period of the graph?

4. By only looking at the graphs of the equations in the form y = sinBx or y = cosBx (and not
knowing the exact equation), can you write an expression that gives the period of the graph?
Student Practice

1. Determine the amplitude and period of each function.

a) y = sin4x b) y = -4cos5x

c) y = -2cos(5/4)x d) y = 3cos(-2x)

2. Determine the amplitude and period of each function. Then write an equation of each graph.

a) b)

3. Give the amplitude and period of each function. Then sketch the graph of the function over the
given interval.

a. 𝑦 = 3 sin 𝑥 𝑜𝑛 [−2𝜋, 2𝜋] b. 𝑦 = 2 sin 2𝑥 𝑜𝑛 [−2𝜋, 2𝜋]

c. 𝑦 = −2 cos 𝑥 𝑜𝑛 [−2𝜋, 2𝜋] d. 𝑦 = − cos 0.5𝑥 𝑜𝑛 [−2𝜋, 2𝜋]
