Adding and Subtracting Integers LP

The lesson plan focuses on teaching students the concepts of adding and subtracting integers, including the rules for operations with positive and negative numbers. Activities include group work, singing, and real-life applications to enhance understanding. The lesson concludes with an evaluation and an assignment to reinforce the concepts learned.

Semi Detailed Lesson Plan in Mathematics

Jhon Mark P. Pinaso

I. Objectives
The learner demonstrates understanding
A. Content Standard of order of operations, ratio and
proportion, percent, exponents, and
integers.
The learner is able to apply knowledge of
B. Performance Standard order of operations, ratio and proportion,
percent, exponents, and integers in
mathematical problems and real-life
situations.
Performs the basic operations on integers.
C. Learning Competency (M6NS-Ilh-155)
At the end of the lesson, the students
should be able to:

D. Unpacked Competency a) distinguish the rules of adding and

subtracting integers;

b) perform the indicated operations using

number lines; and

c) describe the importance of adding and

subtracting integers in real life.

I. Subject Matter
A. Topic Adding and Subtracting Integers

B.Learning Materials Flashcards, visual aid, PPT

C.References

II. Learning Activities

A. Engage
-Prayer
-Greetings
-Checking of Attendance

The class will be given numbers to

1. Review arrange in ascending and descending
order. This review will take five minutes.

Review: Arrange Me!

Direction: Arrange the following numbers

in ascending and descending order.

1, -3, -6, 5, 0, -1

B. Explore
Activity: Sing Along with Me!
1. Motivation
The class will sing a song entitled Integers.
The teacher will first introduce the song,
and then the students will sing along with
her. This will take five minutes.
Based on the previous activity, if the
2. Presentation numbers have the same signs, they should
be added, and the sign should be retained.
If the numbers have different signs, they
should be subtracted, and the sign of the
larger number should be taken. The
teacher will now introduce the topic and
explain that the song presented earlier will
serve as a guide in understanding positive
and negative signs in numbers. This
presentation will last for five minutes.
1.Divide the class into 2 groups.

3. Pre-Activity 2. Let the students decide their leader.

3. Instruct the leader to get the materials.

4. All members should participate.

There will be the same problem given to

the two groups, and they will answer it
using a number line. This activity will take
ten minutes.
Activity: Temperature and Yard Changes

1. One morning the temperature was -4

°C. At noon, the temperature increases to
5 °C. What was the new temperature?

2. A football team gained 6 yards and then

lost 10 yards. Where is the football team
now?
Students will collaborate for three minutes
under the guidance of the teacher.
4. Activity Proper

C. Explain

From the activity, the students will present

1. Group Reporting
The process their group followed in
solving the given problems using a
number line.
Their observations on how the number line
helps in understanding positive and
negative numbers.
How important is understanding integer
operations in real-life applications?

•The teacher will review what integers are,

emphasizing that they include positive
numbers, negative numbers, and zero.

Addition of Integers

2. Discussion •When adding integers with the same sign:

√Add their absolute values.

√Keep the common sign.
Example:
(+4) + (+3) = +7
(-5) + (-2) = -7

•When adding integers with different signs:

Subtract the smaller absolute value from

the larger absolute value.
Keep the sign of the number with the
greater absolute value.
Example:
(+6) + (-4) = +2
(-8) + (+3) = -5

Subtraction of Integers

•Change the subtraction sign to addition

and take the opposite of the second
number (Keep-Change-Change method).
Follow the rules for addition.
Example:
(+7) - (+5) → (+7) + (-5) = +2
(-6) - (-2) → (-6) + (+2) = -4

D. Elaborate
The class will be able to describe the
Generalization importance of knowing the operations of
integers, specifically adding and
subtracting. This generalization will take
three minutes.

Question:

1. Why is knowing how to add and

subtract integers important in our daily
lives?

Let the students solve for the total number

of students in this section and those
absent that day. Let them solve the
integers in their minds. This application
1. Application will take two minutes.
This evaluation will take ten minutes
to answer.

Direction: Solve the following:

1.-6-4-

2.-6+4=

3.-7-(-13)

E.Evaluate
4.8+(-8)=

5.9+8=

lV. Assignment Directions: Give what is being asked. Write

it on ½ paper.

1. The sum of two integers is -100. If one

of them is 50, find the other integer.

2. In a parking lot, there are twice as many

cars as vans. The number of motorcycles
is thrice the number of cars. The total
number of wheels these vehicles have is
696. How many cars are parked in the
parking lot?
