Teaching Reading Skills

Every teacher wants their students to succeed academically and in life. For that, students need to
acquire knowledge, which depends on the activity of reading. The reading activity tends to be a
receptive skill that aims at understanding texts, books, and academic materials. Unfortunately, in
this modern era, students usually find difficulties in retaining information and comprehending
the texts in their classrooms. This is where reading strategies and techniques become more
important to be understood. Hence, this paper argues strategies, techniques, and different
approaches to build students' reading skills.

A teacher may formulate some habits or strategies in an English classroom to enhance students'
reading skills. These strategies may include daily reading rituals, Interactive read-aloud
sessions, phonic and word study, vocabulary enrichment, and reflective reading and
response. Here is the step-by-step description of each strategy:
1. Daily reading rituals:
One of the most powerful strategies is to cultivate a daily reading ritual. The teacher may
encourage students to dedicate a specific time each day to engage with books, stories, or other
reading materials. It depends on the learner to read independently, with a caregiver, or as part of
a structured classroom activity, but it is good to allocate at least 20-30 minutes for independent
reading, which may provide sustained focus and engagement with the text.

2. Interactive read-aloud sessions

The teacher may engage learners in interactive read-aloud sessions. Teachers may read aloud to
students, using expressive voices and gestures to bring the text to life. In this way, he or she may
encourage students to actively participate during the read-aloud sessions, which can be done by
asking questions, making predictions about the story, sharing personal connections, or engaging
in discussions related to the text. This kind of participation fosters critical thinking,
comprehension skills, and a deeper understanding of the content.
3. Phonics and word study
To enhance students’ reading skills, the teacher may conduct phonic and word study activities,
teaching individual sounds (phonemes) and word formation structures (morphemes). It may help
students understand the relationship between letters and sounds and enable them to break down
words and improve their reading skills. For example, phonic games, word-building exercises,
and sight word practice may help them reinforce their pronunciation, spelling, and word
formation skills, thus leading to enhancing reading quality.
4. Vocabulary enrichment
Expanding vocabulary is a critical aspect of building strong reading skills. The teacher may
encourage students to develop a habit of exploring new words and their meanings. For example,
applying Krashen's input hypothesis, he or she may provide students with a comprehensible
input, which is above their current level of competence, to build new vocabulary and enhance
reading skills (e.g., Oxford's English Reading Circle based on students' competence levels).
5. Reflective reading and response
After completing a reading task or finishing a book, a teacher may provide opportunities for
students to reflect on their reading experience. He or she may encourage them to share their
favorite parts, make connections to their own lives, ask questions, or express their opinions. This

kind of activity may further help students master their reading skills through developing
analytical thinking, comprehension skills, and a deeper appreciation for literature.

Enhancing Reading Skills in Students through Different Approaches and Teaching

Methods:
Besides, the teacher may apply different teaching methods, especially GTM, to build students'
reading skills. For example, he or she may translate grammatical rules for students, thus having
the understanding of basic language rules that may help while reading. Moreover, he or she may
apply approaches, such as Universal Design for Learning (UDL), Bloom's Taxonomy, and
Process-Oriented Approach in a classroom to strengthen these strategies. For example, when
teaching phonics and word structures, he or she may provide them with initial support
(Scaffolding) through the process-oriented approach, explaining sounds and different types of
morphemes, so that students may practice and understand the whole phenomenon. Moreover,
using the approach of UDL (e.g., representation, engagement, and expression) the teacher may
provide them with reading materials in different forms (e.g., slides, images, short stories, and
articles according to the evidence-based learning and class dynamics), give them the freedom to
choose the reading material based on their choice, and express their understanding of the text
through whatever way. In the end, these strategies may help students expand vocabulary, build
comprehension skills, develop fluency and pronunciation while reading, and ultimately enhance
knowledge
