Guide Question
 What do you observe in the picture?
 What are the effects of common faults in computer
system?
 What would you do once you encounter this common
faults?
 What would you do to prevent these situations?

Computer Faults
 Issues or malfunctions that affect the performance of a
computer system.
 These are hardware, software, network faults, and
human errors.

Computer User
 Anyone who operates or interacts with a computer
system.
 A computer technician is a professional who installs,
repairs, maintains, and troubleshoots computer
systems.

Guide Question
 As a computer user and a future computer technician,
how will you apply Maintenance, OHS, Housekeeping,
and Computer Diagnostics?
Computer System
 A combination of hardware, software, and peripherals
that work together to process data and perform tasks.

Computer Diagnostics
 The process of identifying, analyzing, and
troubleshooting hardware, software, or network issues
in a computer system. It helps detect problems early
and prevent system failures.
 Troubleshooting involves logical steps to find the root
cause of an issue and apply the appropriate solution

Common Defects in Computer System and Networks

Computer won’t turn on:

This is one of the common computer defects experienced by

the users. A computer systems that suddenly shutdowns or
failing to get sourced from the power supply.

Slow Computer Works:

This is another computer defects where users are experiencing

while performing the computer tasks. This is maybe because
there are some running program backgrounds on it

Computer peripherals are not working:

Peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, webcams or some that

connects the PC in some way play a significant aspect in
computer systems, without it, there would be a failure of
computer related tasks. Some reasons of peripheral
malfunctions are improperly fixed to the ports and clogged
with dusts and so it could be hard for the systems to detect
devices connected on it.

Noisy Computer Systems:

When we discover that the computer system produces extra
noise, it indicates that the computer system is loaded or
sometimes improper installation of hardware components and
or dirt or dusts are present on the system unit.

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD):

This computer defects require important attention especially if

there are some important files or documents stored in the hard
disk drive (HDD). This kind of computer defect or failure to
boot is caused by issues of hardware or a driver (software). A
hardware failure can also initiate a BSOD.

Unable to Connect to Local File or Printer Shares:

Sharing of data from one computer to the other and easy file
access and printout could be done through computer system
networking. Hence, it unable to utilize this tool would hassle
computer related tasks.

The computer system restarts randomly:

If the computer system randomly shut down or restart on its

own, there’s something went wrong with either the hardware
or software that needs to check out. This could further damage
the data or even loose it if it is continuously utilized.

Software Malfunction:

Computer defects does only happen in computer hardware but

also the software. Malfunction of software may cause
unfinished computer related tasks and would lead to data
inefficiencies. Improper shutdown is one of the defects it
causes the computer to run properly. Hence, compatibility on
the part of the new software installed is also one of the things
why computer systems misbehaved.

Unresponsive Internet Browsing:

One of the common computer network defects is the

unresponsive internet browsing. This may cause the
combination of both hardware and software issues.
Forgot Modem’s User Name and WiFi Password:

One of the Securities in Internetworking is the unique user’s

name and password set by the user in his/her modem. The
user’s name and password are ways to access the account,
hence remembering it is very important. Thus, if the user
forgot the user’s name and password set in the modem,
he/she will not be able to open the account.

How to Rectify or Correct the Computer Defects

Rectify means to correct, fix, or make something right. It is
often used when referring to errors, problems, or mistakes.
Rectify/Correct Defects in Computer Systems and Networks
involves identifying and fixing issues to ensure smooth
operation.

Guide Question
 How will you rectify common defects in computer
systems and networks?

Rectify or Correct the Computer Defects

Computer won’t turn on:

Check if the computer system is plugged into the power

source.
If the defects still not working, you can test the computer
systems by plugging it in with another working devices for
confirmation whether or not there is sufficient power on it

Slow Computer Works:

Disable or remove any Terminate-and Stay-Resident program

(TSR) that automatically start every time the computer system
is about to boot. You may also remove the unnecessary
programs in your computer systems so that it free-up space
and the needed programs will work accordingly.
Computer peripherals are not working:

If the peripherals attached to the computer systems suddenly

stop working, Go to Device Manager and see or check if the
driver devices are properly installed. An indication where the
device was not properly installed is the red exclamation mark
(!) which means something error with the device. With this,
delete the device driver and restart the system. Once the
system is working and running, install again the device driver.

Noisy Computer Systems:

Clean the computer systems by removing the dirt or dusts, you

can make use of compressed air or brush to clean it up with
yourself. More so, over locking the computer systems’
graphical processing unit (GPU) and central processing unit
(CPU) may cause or produce noise. With these, do not over
lock and or just tighten it.

Blue Screen of Death (BSOD):

Restart the computer systems unit. Scan the system for

viruses or malware. Check the random-access memory (RAM)
if it properly connected to the motherboard. If the issue is still
causing the BSOD, it maybe the faulty hard drive to
accommodate programs which will lead you to install the
operating system.

Unable to Connect to Local File or Printer Shares:

Check the UTP cable if it properly fixed to the modem or

router. Ensure that all the required services are working. Check
the firewall’s station if the file sharing and printer is block. If
so, unblock this portion. More so, see to it that all Windows
network adapters like Microsoft Networks, Client for Microsoft
Networks, and NetBIOS over TCP/IP are enabled.
The computer system restarts randomly:

Scan the computer system. Use the antivirus and malware

repair and program security.
Let the programs and other applications updated.

Software Malfunction:

To rectify this type of problem, you have to do the system

restore.
By removing the newly installed software can also help to get
back computer the way it was used to.
If it is still not solved the issue, you need to reinstall the
operating systems.

Unresponsive Internet Browsing:

Check if the LAN Network or the Wi-Fi if it has reached to

strong connection or very fast internet connectivity.
Reboot the modem or router and so the network systems will
work to its default settings or functions.
If the defect has not yet resolved, try to uninstall the web
browser, then install again and restart PC or laptop so that full
software functionalities will occur.

Forgot Modem’s User Name and WiFi Password:

Power on the modem router and wait for about one minute in
order the router to boot up. Locate the Reset button on the
modem. Using a small thin object, like the end part of the
paper clip, or pen, press and hold the reset button for about 5
to 7seconds. When the power light begins to blink, release the
button. This will reset the “Factory Reset Settings”. Then
restart the modem.
