Abstract

Recently many studies focus on self-powered electronic devices, thus eliminating the
user’s inconvenience to recharge or replace batteries frequently while also extracting
energy from non-utilized ambient energy sources. Due to its ability to directly convert
mechanical stimuli into electrical output, piezoelectric materials are more suited for
such applications. The most commonly used structural configuration for piezoelectric
energy harvesting is the piezoelectric cantilever. This paper presents a parametric study
on the effect of physical dimensions, nature of materials, and various input
characteristics on the electrical response of a piezoelectric energy harvesting cantilever
system. This also gives an idea about how varying a certain factor influences the
overall output of the system. Ultimately the study aims to aid in predicting whether the
selected material and geometric design of a particular piezoelectric system, under
certain pre-defined constraints, gives optimum results for the vibrations available.
