LESSON PLAN

2025
GRADE: 9 – 3&7
UNIT (S): Trigonometry
TOPIC(S): Trigonometry Ratios
DURATION: 2 weeks
Date: January 27, 2025
TEACHER: Mr. K. Edwards
STANDARDS:
- (Geometry) Explore paths, geometric shapes and space and make generalization
about geometric relationships within the environment.

GENERAL OBJECTIVES: At the end of the lesson students should be able to:

 Appreciate the role of symbols and basic trigonometric techniques in solving problems in
mathematics and related fields;
 Demonstrate the ability to reason with abstract entities.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES: Students should be able to:

1. Understand and define the three primary trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent).
2. Apply trigonometric ratios to find missing sides and angles in right-angled triangles.
3. Solve real-world problems using trigonometry.

KEY SKILLS: Observe, investigate, share, compare, calculate, navigate, estimate, record
information and listen to others
KEY VOCABULARY:
Pythagoras’ Theorem,
Opposite, Adjacent, Hypotenuse,
Line of sight, Elevation,
Depression,
Alternate,
Clinometer,
Sine, Cosine, Tangent

LESSON PLAN
2025
PRIOR LEARNING:
Check that students can:
 Multiply
 Substitute
 Divide

LEARNING OUTCOME:
Students will be able to:
 Understand and define the three primary trigonometric ratios (sine, cosine, tangent).
 Apply trigonometric ratios to find missing sides and angles in right-angled triangles.
 Solve real-world problems using trigonometry.

TEACHING/LEARNING ACTIVITY:
Students will:
- Carry out various activities that will be given by the teacher
ASSESSMENT: Students will be given worksheets
EXTENDED LEARNING:

Challenge students to:

- Identify the different application of transformation
LINKS TO OTHER SUBJECTS:
 Engineering & Science: In mathematics, engineering and science, formulae are used to
relate physical quantities to each other. They provide rules so that if we know the values of
certain quantities, we can calculate the values of others.
 Business Studies: Exponential growth and decay

LESSON PLAN
2025
Day 1: ENGAGE – Introduction to Trigonometric Ratios
Objective: Activate prior knowledge and introduce trigonometry through real-world
applications.
Activities:
1. Real-Life Connection:
o Show images of bridges, ladders, ramps, and mountains.
o Ask: How do engineers, pilots, or surveyors measure heights and distances?
2. Think-Pair-Share:
o Students brainstorm and discuss where angles and right triangles appear in
daily life.
3. Exploration with Right Triangles:
o Provide students with various right triangles (drawn or physical models).
o Ask: What relationships can we observe between the sides?
Evaluation:
 Exit Ticket: Write one place where trigonometry might be useful.

Day 2: EXPLORE – Understanding and Deriving Trigonometric Ratios

Objective: Investigate the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent.
Activities:
1. Hands-On Exploration:
o Provide right triangles with different side lengths.
o Have students measure and calculate the ratios between sides.
2. Introduce the Three Trigonometric Ratios:
o Sine (sin) = Opposite / Hypotenuse
o Cosine (cos) = Adjacent / Hypotenuse
o Tangent (tan) = Opposite / Adjacent
3. Guided Discovery:
o Students work in groups to fill a trigonometric ratio table for given angles.
Evaluation:
 Quick Check: Identify the opposite, adjacent, and hypotenuse in a right triangle.

Day 3: EXPLAIN – Applying Trigonometric Ratios
Objective: Learn how to use sine, cosine, and tangent to solve for missing sides and angles.
Activities:
1. Direct Instruction:
o Walk students through solving for missing sides using trigonometric ratios.
o Example: If sin(30°) = x/10, find x.
2. Guided Practice:
o Solve step-by-step examples together.
o Provide structured worksheets with increasing difficulty.
3. Mnemonic for Remembering Ratios:
o Introduce SOH-CAH-TOA as a memory aid.
Evaluation:
 Practice Problems: Solve for missing sides using trigonometric ratios.

Day 4: ELABORATE – Real-World Applications of Trigonometry

Objective: Apply trigonometric ratios to real-world problems.
Activities:
1. Real-World Scenarios:
o Calculate the height of a building using a known distance and angle.
o Solve ladder and ramp problems using trigonometry.
2. Outdoor Measurement Activity:
o Use a clinometer or protractor to measure an angle of elevation.
o Calculate the height of a flagpole, tree, or school building using trigonometry.
3. Engineering & Navigation Connections:
o Discuss how pilots, engineers, and architects use trigonometry.
Evaluation:
 Word Problem Challenge: Solve a real-world problem using trigonometry.

Day 5: EVALUATE – Assessment & Challenge Problems
Objective: Assess students’ understanding and apply concepts to complex problems.
Activities:
1. Quiz or Worksheet:
o Mixed problems: Finding missing sides, angles, and solving real-life
applications.
2. Project – Trigonometry in Action:
o Students choose a real-world application (e.g., roller coasters, drones,
surveying) and create a poster or presentation explaining how trigonometry is
used.
3. Game-Based Learning:
o Trigonometry Bingo (match problems to solutions).
o Escape Room Challenge (solve trig problems to unlock clues).
Final Evaluation:
 Reflection: Where can you see yourself using trigonometry in the future?

Materials Needed:
✔ Protractors, rulers, calculators
✔ Right triangle cutouts
✔ Clinometer (optional)
