Background Sleep Deprivation

Nursing students often face sleep deprivation due to intensive clinical duties, which negatively impacts their academic performance and well-being. Research indicates a correlation between shorter sleep durations and lower exam scores, highlighting the need for addressing sleep-related challenges. Implementing strategies to improve sleep habits can enhance academic success and prepare nursing students for their future roles.

BACKGROUND HISTORY

The field of nursing requires rigorous academic study complemented by hands-on clinical experience.
However, the challenges of maintaining adequate sleep, especially after difficult clinical tasks, raise
concerns about its impact on nursing students and passing the exam. Understanding the relationship
between different types of sleep deprivation and test performance is essential to promoting student
well-being and academic success.

From early observations, it has been recognized that nursing students often experience disrupted sleep
following intensive clinical duties. Historical perspectives within nursing education acknowledged the
potential repercussions of inadequate sleep on academic achievement but focused more on clinical skill
acquisition.

According to Thomas et. Al 2017, have examined the effects of different durations of sleep deprivation
on nursing students’ exam scores. Research findings suggest a correlation between shorter sleep
durations post-clinical duties and lower exam scores. Students experiencing prolonged sleep deprivation
after clinical shifts often exhibit reduced cognitive abilities and diminished academic performance.

Sleep deprivation may lead to depression, tension, suicidal thoughts, delinquent behavior, fat,
automobile, crashes and bad academic performance, earlier studies have indicated (Taghvaee et. Al
2021). Using student’s personal studies, researchers also have previously proven that delaying education
starting periods resulted in students sleeping longer and performing better academically.

According to Cedars-Senai 2023, sleep specialist tell that one of the telltale signs of sleep deprivation is
feeling asleep within this time. As a matter of fact, even if the work is dull, you should be vigilant within
it if you are not sleep-deprived. Likewise, if you often fall asleep within five hours of lying down, then you
probably get serious sleep deprivation. People with sleep deprivation also have “microsleeps,” which are
short periods of rest within waking period. In some instances, rest deprived people may not yet be
aware that they are having these microsleeps.

Low-quality sleep and sleep deprivation also negatively influence feeling, which has effects for teaching.
Changes in mood affect our ability to gain new knowledge and subsequently to recall the data. Although
prolonged sleep deprivation affects other people in a variety of ways (and those results are not
completely understood), it is clear that the good night’s sleep has a strong impact on learning and
memory. (Alhola et.al 2007)
In conclusion, there are significant differences in exam performance among nursing students
experiencing varying levels of sleep deprivation after engaging in clinical duties. Understanding this
correlation underscores the importance of addressing sleep-related challenges to support the academic
success and well-being of nursing students. Implementing proactive strategies to foster healthier sleep
habits can contribute to improved exam performance and better-equipped future nursing professionals.
