Design of Drainage System for the Academic Zone of MTU
Title of Research
Campus
Period 6 months

Urban drainage systems play a crucial role in managing storm

water runoff and preventing flooding in urban areas. This thesis
proposed to design a robust drainage system for the Mandalay
Technological University (MTU) campus, located adjacent to the
Mya Kha Naut and Sein Kha Nauk Mountains in Mandalay,
Myanmar. The study outlines the key components and
considerations for the design of effective drainage systems to
address the challenges posed by urbanization, climate change,
Introduction and increasing impervious surfaces. By utilizing theodolite
surveying techniques, and conducting surveys of MTU hostels
and departments, the implementation procedure aims to design a
comprehensive open channel drainage network tailored to the
specific needs and geographical characteristics of the university
campus. The visualization of terrain characteristics is obtained
from ArcGIS mapping, while AutoCAD is employed to draft
detailed drainage plans, ensuring accurate representation of
channels and structures. For optimize the drainage system design
for efficiency and effectiveness, Manning's formula is utilized.

infrastructure.
 To provide a comprehensive blueprint for future campus
development projects and infrastructure upgrades, aiding
decision-makers in determining the allocation of resources
towards drainage infrastructure and sustainable urban
water management strategies.

Design of Drainage System for the Academic Zone of the MTU Campus

2.Background
The Mandalay Technological University (MTU) campus, located near the Mya
Kha Naut and Sein Kha Nauk Mountains in Mandalay, Myanmar, faces challenges in
drainage system due to its unique geographical characteristiscs. The deficiency in
drainage infrastructure heightens concerns regarding potential issues such as water
accumulation, soil erosion, and degradation of the surrounding environment.
Although the current drainage system of MTU campus may adequately manage
typical rainfall patterns, the potential for unexpected and intensified rainfall runoff
from the mountains poses a significant concern. With climate change contributing to
increasingly erratic weather patterns, the need to future-proof the campus's drainage
infrastructure becomes imperative. By proactively addressing the drainage challenges
posed by its proximity to the mountains, this research endeavors to safeguard the
campus environment and enhance its resilience against the uncertainties of climate
change.

3.Objectives
 To strengthen the Academic Zone of the MTU campus's ability to withstand
flooding and water-related risks by executing efficient drainage strategies.
 To design an efficient open channel drainage system capable of safely
conveying wastewater and stormwater runoff away from campus buildings and
facilities.
 To evaluate the current state of drainage infrastructure and pinpoint deficiencies
in handling wastewater and rainwater runoff at the Academic Zone of the MTU
campus with relevant environmental regulations and standards governing
wastewater management and drainage infrastructure.
4.Excepted Outcomes

 To develop of a well-designed open channel drainage system customized to suit

the unique requirements and obstacles encountered at the Mandalay
Technological University campus, efficiently handling wastewater and
rainwater runoff while mitigating environmental repercussions.
 To enhance the campus's ability to withstand flooding, erosion, and water-
related dangers by integrating sustainable drainage methodologies and
enhancing infrastructure.
 To provide a comprehensive blueprint for future campus development projects
and infrastructure upgrades, aiding decision-makers in determining the
allocation of resources towards drainage infrastructure and sustainable urban
water management strategies.

6. Implementation Procedures
1. Surveying with Theodolite: Carry out on-site assessments to gather information
on the campus's topography, soil compositions, current drainage infrastructure,
and land usage by using theodilite.
2. Rainfall Data Analysis: Collect and analyze rainfall data of ten year period to
calculate runoff rates, which will inform the design of the drainage system.
3. Wastewater Discharge Assessment: Collect data on the discharge of wastewater
from the various hostels and departments within the MTU campus, aiding in
determining the volume and characteristics of wastewater to be managed by the
drainage system.
4. Application of Manning's Formula: Calculate the hydraulic characteristics of the
drainage system, including flow rates, velocities, and capacities, essential for
determining the design specifications of the channels and structures by utilizing
Manning's formula.
5. AutoCAD Drafting: Create detailed drainage plans based on the surveyed data
and ArcGIS mapping results by using AutoCAD software, ensuring accurate
depiction of drainage channels, structures, and alignments.
6. Integration and Optimization: Integrate the survey data, rainfall analysis,
wastewater discharge assessments, and hydraulic calculations to optimize the
design of the drainage system, ensuring efficient conveyance and management
of stormwater and wastewater across the MTU campus.
7. Review and Validation: Review the proposed drainage plan to ensure
compliance with relevant regulations, standards, and safety requirements.
Validate the design through simulations or modeling to assess its effectiveness
under various scenarios and conditions.
8. Documentation and Reporting: Document the entire design process, including
survey results, calculations, design drawings, and reports, to provide a
comprehensive record of the drainage system implementation for future
reference and analysis.
