Factoring With Common Monomial

The document outlines the objectives and methods for factoring polynomials in Grade 8 mathematics, focusing on finding the greatest common factor (GCF) and using the distributive property. It provides examples and exercises for identifying GCFs of monomials and demonstrates how to factor polynomials completely. Key concepts include GCF, prime factors, monomials, and polynomials in standard form.

Grade 8 – Mathematics

Quarter I
FACTORING POLYNOMIALS
Objectives:
• find the greatest common factor (GCF)
by listing or prime factorization;
• factor polynomials completely with
common monomial factor; and
• use distributive property to factor
polynomials.
• Greatest Common Factor (GCF)
• Prime factors
• Monomial

• Polynomial
• Standard Form
Greatest Common Factor (GCF)
- refers to the common factor having the
greatest numerical factor and with
variables having the least degree.
Example: 6𝑥 and 15𝑥
2 4

6: 1, 2, 3, 6, 𝑥2 6𝑥 : (2)∙(3)∙(𝑥 )
2 2

15: 1, 3, 5, 15, 𝑥 4 15𝑥 : (3)∙(5)∙(𝑥 )

4 4

GCF: 3𝑥 2
GCF: 3𝑥 2
Find the GCF of each pair of monomials.
1. 6a and 18ab 2. 10a and 12𝑎 b 2

6a: (2)∙(3)∙(a) 10a: (2)∙(5)∙(a)

18ab: (2)∙(3)∙(3)∙(a)∙(b) 12𝑎2 b: (2)∙(2)∙(3)∙(𝑎2 )∙(b)

= (2)∙(3)∙(a) = (2)∙(a)
GCF is 6a GCF is 2a
Find the GCF of each pair of monomials.
3. −8𝑥 y and 16xy
2
4. 8𝑎𝑏 and 10𝑎 𝑏
3 2 2

−8𝑥 y: -(2)∙(2)∙(2)∙(𝑥 )∙(y) 8𝑎𝑏3 :(2)∙(2)∙(2)∙(a)∙(𝑏3 )

2 2

16xy: (2)∙(2)∙(2)∙(2)∙(x)∙(y) 10𝑎2 𝑏2 :(2)∙(5)∙(𝑎2 )∙(𝑏2 )

= (2)∙(2)∙(2)∙(x)∙(y) = (2)∙(a)∙(𝑏 )2

GCF is 8xy GCF is 2a𝑏 2

FACTORING POLYNOMIAL
- rewriting a polynomial as a product of
polynomials of smaller degree.
POLYNOMIAL GCF FACTORED FORM
4𝑥 + 6x
2
2x 2x(2x + 3)
3𝑥 + 6x
2
3x 3x(x + 2)
6𝑥 - 14𝑥
4 2
2𝑥 2 2𝑥 (3𝑥 - 7)
2 2
4𝑥 + 6x = 2x(2x) + 2x(3)
2 Use GCF to rewrite the
polynomial

= 2x(2x + 3) Use the distributive property

3𝑥 + 6x = 3x(x) + 3x(2)
2 Use GCF to rewrite the
polynomial

= 3x(x + 2) Use the distributive property

6𝑥 - 14𝑥 = 2𝑥 (3𝑥 ) - 2𝑥 (7)
4 2 2 2 2

= 2𝑥 (3𝑥 - 7)
2 2

7a(a+3) - c(a+3) 8m(n+3) + p(n+3)

(a + 3)(7a – c) (n + 3)(8m + p)
4(3b-1) + 5a(1-3b) + 4c(3b-1)

4(3b-1) - 5a(-1+3b) + 4c(3b-1)

4(3b-1) - 5a(3b-1) + 4c(3b-1)

(3b-1) (4 - 5a + 4c)
