Lesson 1: Carpentry and It’s history

What is Carpentry?
-​ The activity or occupation of making or repairing things in wood.
Carpenter - A peron who makes and repairs wooden objects and structures.
-​ Social skills, balance, reading and math skills, good physical condition.

Timber - The wood of trees cut and prepared for use as building material.
Lumber - Timber sawed into boards, planks, or other structural members of standard or
specified length.

History of Carpentry
8000 BC - Primitive people used stone axes
Europeans - Built rectangular timer houses
Egyptians - Used copper tools on 4000 BC
2000 BC - They developed bronze tools
Carpentum - Two wheeled chariots
Carpentarious - Makes carpentums

1873 - Electric power was used for the first time


1917 - First electric hand drill
1925 - Electric portable saw

Members of the Guild


Master - Much experience and knowledge, trained apprentices.
Apprentice - Lived with the master and was provided by the master. Works without pay.
Journeyman - Employee. Works for wages.

Types of Carpentry jobs


Finish Carpentry - Last step in the carpentry progress.
Cabinetmaker - Specialized type of woodworker who makes cabinets.
Trim Carpenters - “Finish carpenters”. Install and repair molding and trim found on windows,
doors and more. Final details.
Rough Carpentry - Foundation of the house.

Lesson 2: Boring Tools

What are Boring Tools?


-​ This is the process of enlarging a hole that has already been drilled (or cast).

There are 3 types of Bits:


Auger Bit
-​ Tool used to make a hole in wood.
Expansive Bit
-​ Tool used to drill holes of various sizes in wood.
Drill Bit
-​ Tool used for boring holes either in metals, wood or plastic.
Holding Tools
C-clamp
-​ Used for holding together pieces of lumber while working.
Bench vise
-​ Used to hold materials or tools in place.

Miscellaneous Tools
Oil Stone
-​ Used for sharping edge cutting tools such as “Chisel”.
File or Rasp
-​ Used for smoothening metal and wood surfaces.
Paint Brush
-​ Used to apply paint or varnish.

Power Tools
Sander
-​ Portable power tool used for sanding furniture pieces.
Jigsaw
-​ Used primarily for cutting curved or irregular and shapes from wood surfaces.
Circular Saw
-​ Used for many types of cutting particularly on large panel stock.
Electric Drill
-​ Used to drill holes in various materials.

What is Personal Protective Equipment? (PPE)


-​ To minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace inguries and illnesses.

Results from:

●​ Electrical
●​ Mechanical
●​ Any other workplace hazards

PPE items:
●​ Gloves
●​ Safety glasses
●​ Shoes
●​ Earplugs/muffs
●​ Hard hats

●​ Vest and full body suits

Goggles
-​ To protect your eyes from harmful liquids.
Ear protectors
-​ To protect your ears against frequency noises.
Face mask
-​ To prevent inhalation of paint.
Gloves
-​ To protect hands while working.
Apron
-​ To protect the worker against flying debris.

Lesson 3: Carpentry Tools


-​ Carpentry tools is a device used for Carpentry. Each tool has its own function and is
used by carpenters.

Hard Tools or Types of Saws:


Crosscut saw
-​ Saw with a handle at each end, used for cutting across the grain of Timber.
Hack Saw
-​ Consists of a tough blade, wire or chain. Used to cut through material.
Keyhole Saw
-​ Has smaller and fine blades.
Chisel
-​ Used for making many things. Making a hole in a part of wood to make a joint.

Types of Hammers:
Hammer
-​ Delivering a blow (a sudden impact). Used for nails, fit parts, metal, and break apart
objects.
Claw Hammer
-​ Hammer with one side of the head split. Used for extracting nails.
Ball-peer hammer
-​ “Machenist’s hammer”. Used for metal working.
Sledge hammer
-​ Large, flat and made of metal. This applies more force than other hammers.

Other tools:
Axe
-​ For cutting trees or cutting logs.
Jack Plane
-​ Tool for smoothing.
Block Plane
-​ Used for planning across the end grain of wood.
Mallet
-​ Large, usually wooden. Used for hitting a Chisel. Also used for lifting a croquet or
polo ball.

Measuring tools
Tape Measure
-​ Used for measuring.
Try Square
-​ Used to check and make right angles in construction work.
Framing Square
-​ “Steel Square”. Used as a straight edge, finding right angles and making cut-off work.
Sliding T-bevel
-​ Usually made of plastic or wood. Connected to a metal blade with a wing nut.
Spirit Level
-​ “Bubble bevel”. Used to indicate whether a surface is Louver (Horizontal) or Plumb
(Vertical)
Calipers
-​ Compass with inward or outward-facing points.

Marking Tools - process of transferring.


Chalk line
-​ “Chalk box”. Used to make long straight lines on flat surfaces.
Marking gauge
-​ “Scratch gauge”. Scribble a line parallel to a reference edge or surface.

Pencil
-​ For writing and drawing.
Marking knife
-​ “Stricting knife”. Woodwork layout tool. Used to scribble a line.

Lesson 5: Woodworking Joints

Joinery
-​ Part of woodworking that involves joining together pieces of timer or lumber to
produce more complex items.

Types of Joints:
Butt Joint - Easy woodworking joint. This is the simplest joint to make, it is also the weakest.
Dado Joint - A slot cut into the surface of a piece of wood.
Dovetail Joint - A strong woodworking joint. It is great for tensile strength. This is used to
connect the sides of a drawer to the front.
Finger Joint - One of the popular woodworking joints. To join two pieces of wood to each
other, like a dovetail joint.
Mortise and Tenon Joint - One of the strongest woodworking joints is the mortise and tenon
joint.
Bridle Joint - Similar to mortise and tenon. You cut a tenon on the end of one piece and a
mortise into the other piece to accept it. You cut the tenon and the mortise to the full width
of the tenon piece.
Lap Joint - A half lap joint is one of the frequently used woodworking joints.
Rabbet Joint - A rabbet is a recess cut into the edge of a piece of wood.
Tongue and Groove Joint - One of the most popular woodworking joints is the edge-to-edge
joint, called tongue and groove.
