What is Carpentry?
- The activity or occupation of making or repairing things in wood.
Carpenter - A peron who makes and repairs wooden objects and structures.
- Social skills, balance, reading and math skills, good physical condition.
Timber - The wood of trees cut and prepared for use as building material.
Lumber - Timber sawed into boards, planks, or other structural members of standard or
specified length.
History of Carpentry
8000 BC - Primitive people used stone axes
Europeans - Built rectangular timer houses
Egyptians - Used copper tools on 4000 BC
2000 BC - They developed bronze tools

Oil Stone
- Used for sharping edge cutting tools such as “Chisel”.
File or Rasp
- Used for smoothening metal and wood surfaces.
Paint Brush
- Used to apply paint or varnish.

Sander
- Portable power tool used for sanding furniture pieces.
Jigsaw
- Used primarily for cutting curved or irregular and shapes from wood surfaces.

Types of Hammers:
Hammer
- Delivering a blow (a sudden impact). Used for nails, fit parts, metal, and break apart
objects.
Claw Hammer
- Hammer with one side of the head split. Used for extracting nails.
Ball-peer hammer
- “Machenist’s hammer”. Used for metal working.
Sledge hammer
- Large, flat and made of metal. This applies more force than other hammers.

Try Square
- Used to check and make right angles in construction work.
Framing Square
- “Steel Square”. Used as a straight edge, finding right angles and making cut-off work.
Sliding T-bevel
- Usually made of plastic or wood. Connected to a metal blade with a wing nut.
Spirit Level
- “Bubble bevel”. Used to indicate whether a surface is Louver (Horizontal) or Plumb
(Vertical)
Calipers
- Compass with inward or outward-facing points.
Pencil
- For writing and drawing.
Marking knife
- “Stricting knife”. Woodwork layout tool. Used to scribble a line.
Joinery
- Part of woodworking that involves joining together pieces of timer or lumber to
produce more complex items.
Types of Joints:
Butt Joint - Easy woodworking joint. This is the simplest joint to make, it is also the weakest.
Dado Joint - A slot cut into the surface of a piece of wood.
Dovetail Joint - A strong woodworking joint. It is great for tensile strength. This is used to
connect the sides of a drawer to the front.
Finger Joint - One of the popular woodworking joints. To join two pieces of wood to each
other, like a dovetail joint.
Mortise and Tenon Joint - One of the strongest woodworking joints is the mortise and tenon
joint.
Bridle Joint - Similar to mortise and tenon. You cut a tenon on the end of one piece and a
mortise into the other piece to accept it. You cut the tenon and the mortise to the full width
of the tenon piece.
Lap Joint - A half lap joint is one of the frequently used woodworking joints.
Rabbet Joint - A rabbet is a recess cut into the edge of a piece of wood.
Tongue and Groove Joint - One of the most popular woodworking joints is the edge-to-edge
joint, called tongue and groove.
