GenAI and AI Agents Are Different But Connected

Generative AI (GenAI) refers to AI techniques that learn a


representation of artifacts from data and use it to generate brand-
new, unique artifacts that resemble but don’t repeat the original data

Examples: novel content (text, images, video and audio, structures), code,
synthetic data, workflows and models of physical objects.

N.B. A person submitting an iterative sequence of questions, instructions or requests (i.e. manual prompt
engineering) does not cause GenAI to act autonomously, adapt, or execute goals in complex environments.

The Generative AI (LLM) Part Is Not The AI Agent

However, there is a common AI practice to use GenAI to


drive planning and content generation for AI agents.

AI agents may use GenAI (composed with other AI techniques) to:


• enhance their agency
• understand a request from a human (or another AI agent)
• create a plan of action to be taken by a human or AI agent
