EXAMPLE 2
The positive, negative and zero sequence components of line currents are
20∠100 , 6∠600 and 3∠300 A respectively. Determine the line currents.
Solution: Given 𝐼𝑎1 = 20∠100 = 19.69 + 𝑗3.47 𝐴
𝐼𝑎2 = 6∠600 =
= 27.25∠21.880
7
Line current 𝐼𝑐 = 𝐼𝑎0 + 𝑎. 𝐼𝑎1 + 𝑎2 . 𝐼𝑎2
= (3∠300 + 20∠100 + 1200 + 6∠(600 +2400 )
= (-7.27+j11.62)A
= 13.7∠1220 𝐴

EXAMPLE 3
In a 3 phase system, 𝑰𝒂𝟏 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎∠𝟑𝟎𝟎 A, 𝑰𝒃𝟐 = 𝟒𝟎∠𝟗𝟎𝟎 A,
and 𝑰𝒄𝟎 = 𝟏𝟎∠ −𝟑𝟎𝟎 A. Find the line currents.
Solution: Consider fig. The negative sequence components of line currents are
depicted in the sketch.
𝐹𝑟𝑜𝑚 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑓𝑖𝑔𝑢𝑟𝑒, 𝑖𝑡 𝑐𝑎𝑛 𝑏𝑒 𝑜𝑏𝑠𝑒𝑟𝑣𝑒𝑑 𝑡ℎ𝑎𝑡
𝐼𝑏2 = 𝑎. 𝐼𝑎2
𝐼 0 /1∠1200
𝐼𝑎2 = 𝑏2 = 40∠90
𝑎
= 40∠ −300
= (34.6 − 𝑗20)𝐴
𝐴𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑤𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒
𝐼𝑎0 = 𝐼𝑏0 = 𝐼𝑐0 = 10∠−300 = 8.66 − 𝑗5 𝐴.
𝑇ℎ𝑢𝑠, 𝑤𝑒 ℎ𝑎𝑣𝑒
𝐼𝑎0 = 𝐼𝑏0 = 𝐼𝑐0 = 10∠−300 = 8.66 − 𝑗5 𝐴
𝐼𝑎1 = 100∠300 = 86.6 + 𝑗50 𝐴
𝐼𝑎2 = 40∠−300 = 34.6 − 𝑗20 𝐴
9
Hence line currents are
𝐼𝑎 = 𝐼𝑎0 + 𝐼𝑎1 + 𝐼𝑎2
= 8.66 − 𝑗5 + 86.6 + 𝑗50 + 34.6 − 𝑗20
= 129.86 + 𝑗25
= 132.24∠10.890 𝐴
we have
𝐼𝑏 = 𝐼𝑎0 + 𝑎2 𝐼𝑎1 + 𝑎𝐼𝑎2
= 8.66 − 𝑗5 + 1 ∠2400 86.6 + 𝑗50 + 1 ∠1200 + 34.6 − 𝑗20
=65.57 ∠ − 82.41 𝐴
𝐼𝑐 = 𝐼𝑎0 + 𝑎. 𝐼𝑎1 + 𝑎2 . 𝐼𝑎2
= 8.66 − 𝑗5 + 1 ∠1200 86.6 + 𝑗50 + 1 ∠2400 + 34.6 − 𝑗20
=115.32 ∠167.47 𝐴

Example 4: The currents in a 3 phase unbalanced system are :
𝐼𝑅 = 12 + 𝑗6 𝐴, 𝐼𝑌 = 12 − 𝑗12 𝐴, 𝐼𝐵 = −5 + 𝑗10 𝐴. The phase sequence is
RYB. Calculate the zero, positive and negative sequence components of the
currents.
Solution:
𝐼𝑅 =(12+j6)=13.42∠26.560
𝐼𝑌 = 12 − 𝑗12 = 16.97∠−450
𝐼𝑌 = −5 + 𝑗10 = 11.18∠116.560
11
Sequence components of line currents are:
1
𝐼𝑅0 = (𝐼𝑅 + 𝐼𝑌 + 𝐼𝐵 )
3
1
= 12 + 𝑗6 + 12 − 𝑗12 − 5 + 𝑗10
3
= 6.47∠11.880 𝐴
1
𝐼𝑅1 = (𝐼𝑅 + 𝑎𝐼𝑌 + 𝑎2 𝐼 𝐵 )
3
1
= 13.42∠26.560 + 16.97∠ −450 +1200 + 11.18∠116.560 + 2400
3
= 11.69∠38.260 𝐴
1
𝐼𝑅2 = (𝐼 + 𝑎2 𝐼𝑌 + 𝑎𝐼 𝐵 )
3 𝑅
1
= 13.42∠26.560 + 16.97∠ −450 +2400 + 11.18∠116.560 + 1200
3
= 4.35∠ −143.80 𝐴
