3. We Can Sense
I. Know These Terms:
1. Sensation – A Feeling caused by something affecting your body.
2. Respond – To say or do something as a reaction to something

II. Answer the following Questions:

1. What are sense organs? Name them.


The organs that help us to feel and sense things around us are called sense organs.
Eyes, ears, nose, tongue and skin are our five sense organs.
2. Why do we behave differently in different situations?
We behave differently in different situations because our senses are closely linked
with our brain through nerves. They send messages to the brain which tells us
what to do.
3. How does our skin help us?
Skin protects us in the following ways.
• It covers and protects the whole body.
• It helps us to feel sensations like hot, cold, wet, dry, rough, smooth, hard, soft
and sticky.
• It also helps us to touch and identify the things even if our eyes are shut.
• It also helps in maintaining the body temperature by sweating.
4. How can our nose detect odour of a rose?
When we smell a rose, its smell enters through the nostrils. The nose then sends a
message to our brain which tells us that it is a good smell.

4. People and their Skills


I. Know These Terms:
1. Degree – Qualification given to a student after he or she complete studies.
2. Institute - An organisation set for researching or teaching.
3. Academy – A place of study or training in a special field.

II. Give reason for the following statements.


1. A driver needs a driving license to drive a vehicle.
A driver needs a driving license to show that she/he knows how to drive safely and
follows the rules of the road. It’s like a permission slip to drive.

2. One needs a formal training to become a doctor or soldier.


Many professions require special training from a college or institute. For example,
doctors, teachers, engineers, sculptors and fashion designers all need to go to college
or institute to learn how to do their jobs.

III. Answer the following Questions:


1. How do people learn different types of skills?
People learn different skills either from other people and practicing it over and over
again or the skills can be inborn.
2. Name any five professions for which a person needs formal training from a college
or institute.
Many professions like doctors, teachers, engineers, sculptors and disc jockeys require
special training from a college or institute.
3. How is the situation of gender and work changing?
The situation of gender and work is changing these days as most jobs were done by
men earlier. Very few women were encouraged to get educated or take up jobs or do
business. But nowadays, no occupation is limited to only men or women. Most jobs
which were considered to be fit only for men are now being done by women also.
Now, women choose professions such as doctors, engineers, pilots, scientists and even
soldiers.
4. What does a journalist do?
Journalists collect and write news stories and articles for magazines and newspapers.
They also present news on TV.

5. Ways of Recreation

I. Know These Terms:


1. Harmony - A state of peaceful living.
2. Regulation - Control of something by using rules.

II. Give reasons for the following statements.

1. We all love to play games.


We all love to play games because they refresh our minds and we feel relaxed.
2. Fairs are held in huge open grounds.
Fairs are held in huge open grounds because they need lots of space for all the fun
rides, games, and activities. It’s like a big playground for everyone to enjoy.

3.Children enjoy watching puppet shows.

Children enjoy watching puppet shows because they are colourful, fun and tell
exciting stories. Children also get to learn moral values by watching puppet shows.
III. Answer the following Questions:
1. Name five games you play in school.

The games that we play in school are basketball, lawn tennis, chess, badminton
and football.

2. How does playing together help us?

Playing together helps to build confidence, understanding, harmony and respect


for one another.

3. What are your favourite means of recreation? Name any three.

My favourite means of recreation are __________, __________ and __________


(dancing/ singing/ painting/ cooking/ reading/ playing).
4. How does a puppet move?
A puppet is a small figure of a doll representing an animal or a human being made
of cloth. It is moved with the help of strings attached to its body parts.
