Present Perfect Simple

Form
Subject + have/has + Past participle/V3
Subject + have/has not + Past participle/V3
Have/has… + Past participle?

Usage

1) Actions that started in the past and continue until now.


Keywords – for, since

E.g. I have lived in America for 10 years.


She has worked here since 2015.

2) Recently completed actions.


Keywords – recently, just, already, yet

E.g. I've just got up.


She has already eaten dinner.
They haven’t arrived yet.
I have recently started a new job.

3) Action happened in the past, but the time period is still continuing.
Keywords – today, this week

E.g. She has eaten out three times this week.


I have seen her twice today.

4) Actions that happened at an unspecified time in the past. (including Life Experiences)
Keywords – ever, never, before, up to now, still, so far

E.g. Have you ever climbed a mountain?


I have never visited Bagan before.
She has written five articles so far.
This is the best book I have read up to now.
I still haven’t decided what to do.
Past Simple

Form
Subject + Past tense/V2
Subject + did not + verb
Did… + verb?

Usage

1) Completed action or event in the past. (usually with specific time)


E.g. I went to Paris last year.

2) A series of past actions


E.g. I woke up, brushed my teeth, and then had coffee.

3) Past habits or states


E.g. When I was young, I went to my friends' house every day.
She lived in New York for five years before moving to LA.
