database and then define the relationships between selected tables. You can then use the
defined query when creating a link. You use the Source Query Wizard to define a source
query.
1. Do one of the following:
▪ Click File > New > Query.
▪ Right-click the Queries folder and then click New Query on the shortcut menu.
2. In the Source Query Wizard, on the Define the Query Name and Description page,
under Query, type the query name.
3. Under Description, type a brief description of the query if needed.
4. Click Next.
5. On the Select the Source Tables page, from the Source tables list, select a table and click
to move it to the Selected tables list.

You can click to select and move all the source tables to the Selected
tables list.
6. Click Next.
7. On the Define the Relationships Between Tables page, click Add.
8. To define the relationships between the tables, from the Left Table and Right Table lists,
select the tables that you want to join.
9. From the Left Column and Right Column lists, select the columns that correspond to
common or compatible data in both left and right tables.
10. Click Add to define another relationship or click Next.
11. On the Completing the Source Query Wizard - Query Results page, examine the query
results and click Finish when done.

Working with Import Links

In order to import data to Smart Electrical, you must create a link between the source database
or an external data file and your Smart Electrical database. There are various types of link
depending on what you want to import. To import electrical items, for example, loads, you need
to define a data link. In addition to data links, there are association links, lookup table links,
select list links, and data deletion links.

uniqueness of the imported data in this field. Import Manager will insert or update the data
according to the import mode settings. You can define a combination of field uniqueness by
selecting the Key check box next to several target fields. However, you must set at least
one field as unique.
In an Import Manager data link, when using a unique key which is not the Item
Tag or using the Item Tag as a unique key with other unique keys, the software might insert
non-Unique items.
16. Click Next.
17. On the Completing the Data Link Wizard page, click View to examine the data link
summary information.
18. Click Finish to create the link.

▪ Importing transformer data requires special handling. This is due to the fact that
transformers are composed of transformer and transformer component item types. For
more information, see Importing Transformers: Special Notes (on page 14).
▪ There are special requirements for data links intended to insert operating case data for plant
items. For details, see Importing Operating Case Data (on page 24).

Intergraph Smart Electrical Import Manager User's Guide 13

Working with Import Links

Importing Transformers: Special Notes

Importing transformer data requires special handling. This is due to the fact that transformers
are composed of transformer and transformer component item types. Therefore the data link for
transformers must provide sufficient information about the source transformers and their
components. Import Manager uses the information provided in the following transformer item
type properties:

Property Setting

NumberOfSecondaries 1 - Defines a 2-winding transformer

2 - Defines a 3-winding transformer

Secondary1ItemTag Item tag of the first transformer

component - secondary winding

Secondary2ItemTag Item tag of the second transformer

component - secondary winding (used
only for 3-winding transformers)

The software does not support testing of transformer links.

Miscellaneous Import Options

Import Data to Different Plant Group Types

You can create a data link that enables you to import items to different plant group types. To
achieve this goal, in Options Manager, you need to set the item hierarchy level for the required
item type. Then, you can use the Code Adaptation wizard to define the property code.
The plant hierarchy path of the required item types must be defined in the
source data. To define the correct hierarchy path of the source data, use the Get Plant
Hierarchy Path dialog box to copy the exact hierarchy path for each source electrical item. For
details, see Insert Correct Item Hierarchy Paths in Source Data (on page 26).
1. In Options Manager, define the item hierarchy of the source item type as follows:
a. On the Options Manager menu bar, click Options > Item Types.
b. For each item type that you require, select an item type from the Item Types list.

c. Select a value for the Plant group type property and click Save .
2. In Import Manager, start the Code Adaptation Wizard (for details, see Adapt Property
Codes (on page 10).)
3. On the Define the Property Code page, select the ItemHierarchy property.
4. Select a source value in the Property map pane and click Add to define the target value.
5. Define a data link for the same item type. For details, see Create a Data Link (on page 12).
6. On the Source and Target Definition page of the Data Link wizard, select the appropriate
code adaptation if needed and click Next.
7. Map the ItemHierarchy target field as required and run the data link.

Importing Operating Case Data

You can import plant item values from an external source and insert these values into a specific
operating case in your plant. This way, you can quickly populate plant item values for various
cases that exist in your plant.
Note that this feature does not create new operating cases in your plant. You
can only populate the existing operating cases with external plant item values.
To carry out this task, follow the normal workflow that you use with data links.
1. Create a data link for operating case data insertion. For details, see Create a Data Link (on
page 12).
2. In the Data Link Wizard, on the Source and Target Definition page, select
EquipmentOperatingCase from the Target item type list.
3. On the Map the Fields of the Source Table and Target Item Type Properties page,
make sure that you map the following target item type properties:
▪ Operating Case.Case Name (mandatory) — sets the appropriate operating case into
which the values will be inserted.
▪ Plant Item.Item.Item Tag (mandatory) — sets the appropriate plant item into which the
operating case data will be inserted.

Intergraph Smart Electrical Import Manager User's Guide 24

Miscellaneous Import Options

▪ ItemHierarchy (optional) — sets the appropriate plant hierarchy if there are plant items
with identical tag names in various plant group items (for example, motor M-100 exist in
both unit A and unit B in your plant).
▪ Equipment.Electrical Equipment Sub Class (optional) — sets the appropriate
equipment sub-class if the naming conventions in your plant are not set to be unique.
This will avoid an import rejection if, for example, your naming conventions allow the
existence of motor M-100 and motor heater M-100.
4. Select the Key check box for each of the above mapped properties. For more information
about this check box, see Map the Fields of the Source Table and Target Item Type
Properties (Data Link Wizard) (on page 42).
5. Click Next in the Data Link Wizard to continue the workflow of the data link creation.

Types
This feature allows you to create an association between items that belong to different plant
group types.
1. In Import Manager, run the Association Link wizard for a required item type. For details,
see Create an Association Link (on page 14).
In order to associate two items that belong to different hierarchy levels,
the ItemHierarchy property must be one of the of the mapped properties both for the parent
and child target item types.
2. On the Define the Association page, in the Target group box, select the required item type
from the Parent item type list.
3. Under Parent item type, click in the Item Type Property box and select ItemHierarchy
from the list.
4. From the Source pane, select a source field and drag it to the parent ItemHierarchy source
field under Parent item type in the Target group box.

1. In Import Manager, click Tools > Get Hierarchy Path.
2. From the Target item type list, select an item type.
3. In the hierarchy tree, select the correct hierarchy level for each item.
4. Click Copy.
The software copies the hierarchy path to the Windows Clipboard.
5. Paste the path in the appropriate place in the source.

Workflow for Importing Smart Instrumentation Cables

The following workflow describes the necessary steps that are needed to import Smart
Instrumentation cables and their To and From equipment.

Do the following in Smart Instrumentation:

1. From the SQL Editor folder in the Smart Instrumentation reference folder, import the Cable
Connection.sql file, found in the SQL folder in the Smart Instrumentation home folder.
2. Generate a View only EDE using the Cable Connection.sql file.
3. Save the results as an Excel.xls file
The name of the Excel file must be SPIDomainCables.xls and you must
save it in the same location where the SPI_Import.xml (supplied with Smart Electrical) is
stored.

Do the following in Microsoft Excel:

▪ Open the SPIDomainCables.xls and define a name range for a range that starts at A1 and
includes the last cell in the PanelId2 column.
The name must be SPI_Cables.

Intergraph Smart Electrical Import Manager User's Guide 26

Miscellaneous Import Options

Do the following in Smart Electrical Import Manager:

1. In the left pane, under Link Groups, select the SPI_Import group and then select all the
links belonging to this group in the right pane.
2. Click Tools > Update Source Connection.
3. On the Data Link Properties dialog box, change the database name to SPI_Cables.xls and
make sure that the path points to the location where you saved the SPI_Cables.xls file.
4. Repeat steps 1 through 3 for the Ref. Cables group.
5. In the left pane, select all the links belonging to the Ref. Cables group and run import.
Smart Instrumentation reference cables (called cable types in Smart
Instrumentation) are imported into the Smart Electrical cable list in order to create an
association between the reference and plant cables. Note that the import procedure only
imports the reference cable names without any other data. As a result, you must enter this
data manually so that the imported reference cables have all the required data (for example,
cable structure). If you decide to enter this data at a later stage and use these reference
cables to create plant cables, the software will create these plant cables without any sets or
conductors.
6. In the left pane, select all the links belonging to the SPI_Import group and run import.
For information how to generate an SQL/EDE in Smart Instrumentation and how to
define a name range in Microsoft Excel, refer to the pertinent topics in the documentation of
Smart Instrumentation and Microsoft Excel.
