Electrical resistance
resistor 1 0.088 4
resistor 2 0.033 1
2. Predict what will happen to the order of resistances if another cell is added to the
circuit.
The order of resistances will stay the same as the components have not changed.
The resistance of the circuit depends on the components, not the voltage, so increasing the
voltage will increase the current through the circuit, but the resistance will stay the same.
3. Carry out the test again, this time with two cells, and record the results in another
table.
Sample results:
component current (A) order of resistance
(highest = 1, then 2 etc)
resistor 1 0.185 4
resistor 2 0.066 1

This is because the components to be tested were the same each time.
The resistances of the different components (the bulbs, pencil and resistors) were the independent
variables in each test.
The other variables were the rest of the components in the circuit. These were kept the same as
they were control variables.
State whether each statement is correct or incorrect and explain your answers.
Laura’s statement is incorrect; the bulbs do not need to be near to the cell, as the position in
the circuit does not affect their brightness.
Jacob’s statement is correct; the position that the bulbs are in does not affect their brightness.
The bulbs will also be equally bright in a series circuit as they are identical and therefore have
identical resistances. All the lights oppose the current and when the current is switched on, it has
to be pushed through all the lights at the same time.
