I. OBJECTIVES
A. Content The learner demonstrates an understanding of key
Standards concepts of the axiomatic structure of geometry and
triangle congruence.
B. Performance The learner is able to formulate an organized plan to
Standards handle a real-life situation.
C. Learning The learner illustrates the need for an axiomatic
Competencie structure of a mathematical system in general, and in
s /Objectives Geometry in particular: (a) defined terms; (b)
undefined terms; (c) postulates; and (d) theorems.
M8GE-llla-c-1
At the end of this lesson, the learners are able to:
1. define axiomatic system;
2. determine the figure that best represents the
postulate; and
3. inculcate discipline during discussion.

A. Activity/ Review of the previous lesson by determining
Reviewing whether each of the following are TRUE or FALSE.
Previous 1. Points A, N, and D are collinear. TRUE

Lesson

2. Points A, R, Z, and K are coplanar. FALSE

3. Points C, R, Z, and T are non-coplanar. TRUE
4. Points R, Z, and T are non-collinear. FALSE
5. Points M, K, and T are coplanar. TRUE

Present the new lesson by asking the students to

identify the following statement that they believed
was true.
1. Toilet seats are full of germs.
2. The earth orbits around the sun.
3. The sun sets in the west.
4. The Philippines is found in Africa.
5. A line contains at least two points.

B. Establishing a To synthesize the output of the students, the

Purpose for facilitator will ask selected students to share their
the Lesson ideas by answering the following questions:
1. What are the statements you believed or assumed
as true? Why?
2. What are the statements you considered as not
true? Why?
3. What do you think is the mathematical term of
those statements that are assumed to be true?

Axioms and/or Postulates are statements assumed

to be true and have no need for further proof.
Consider the statements:

1. The sun sets in the west.

2. The Philippines is found in Asia.
3. There are 7 days in a week.
4. A line contains at least two points.
5. A plane contains at least 3 noncollinear points.

An axiomatic system consists of undefined terms

together with a list of statements (called “axioms”)
that are presupposed to be true. What this means is
that for every theorem in Math, there exists an
axiomatic system that contains all the axioms needed
to prove that theorem.

D. Discussing Introduce to the class the five (5) axioms of Geometry

Concepts and of Alexandria.
Practicing
New Skills # The Five Axioms of Geometry
1 1. First Axiom – You can join any two points using
exactly one straight-line segment.
2. Second Axiom – You can extend any line
segment to an infinitely lone line
3. Third Axiom – Given a point P and a distance r,
you can draw a circle with center P and radius r.
4. Fourth Axiom – Any two right angles are
congruent.
5. Fifth Axiom – Given a line l and a point P not on l,
there is exactly one line through P that is parallel to l.
This is also known as the parallel line postulate.

E. Discussing Introduce the other common notions.

New Other common Axioms/Postulates

numbers p and q, if p =q, then q can be substituted
for p in any expression.

8. If two distinct planes intersect, then their

intersection is a line.

9. If two points of a line are in a plane, then the

line containing these points is in the plane.

measure of two adjacent angles is equal to the sum
of the two original angle measures.
