Me306-Hw02-2009Spring

This document is a homework assignment for ME 306 Fluid Mechanics II at Middle East Technical University, detailing five problems related to pump performance characteristics. Each problem requires calculations for parameters such as rotational speed, efficiency, power consumption, and impeller diameter adjustments under specific conditions. The assignment emphasizes neglecting Reynolds number effects and provides answer keys for each problem.

ME 306 FLUID MECHANICS II
HOMEWORK 2

Submit (only) the solution of Problem 5 on March 10th, Tuesday, in class.

1) The performance characteristics of a pump operating at 1450 rpm are given in the
following figure. It is desirable to pump water against a head of 45 m at a volumetric flow rate
of 0.05 m3/s by changing the speed. Determine
a) the rotational speed of the pump,
b) the efficiency of the pump and
c) the power consumption of the pump.
Neglect the Reynolds number effects for similar operating points.
(Ans.: a) 1520 rpm, b) 79.8%, c) 27.66 kW)

Volumetric Flow Rate (m3/s)

3) A centrifugal pump is designed to deliver a head of 60 m at a volumetric flow rate of 0.8

m3/s when it is running at 1470 rpm. The design performance of this pump is to be determined
in the laboratory by using a model. As a result of the experiment on the model, the power
consumption of the model is measured 10 kW when it is delivering 0.1 m3/s of water. The
efficiency of the model is found as 80 percent. The density of water is 1000 kg/m3. Neglecting
the Reynolds number effects,
a) find out the rotational speed of the model and the length scale,
b) estimate the power consumption of the prototype pump.
c) Find out if the power consumption estimation of (b) is larger than the actual power
consumption of the prototype pump.
(Ans.: a) 930.7 rpm, 1.717 b) 588.6 kW)

4) A turbine is designed to operate under a net head of 80 m when the volumetric flow rate of
water is 2 m3/s. The performance of this design is to be tested in the laboratory by using a 1/4

scale model to be run at the same efficiency as the prototype. The model turbine is operating
under a head of 10 m, yielding a power output of 3.5 kW. Determine
a) the volumetric flow rate for the model and
b) the efficiency of the prototype
neglecting the Reynolds number effects for similar operating points.
c) If the Reynolds number effects are not neglected, estimate the efficiency of the
prototype.
(Ans: a-0.04419 m3s-1 b- 80.7 % c- 84.41 % )

5) A centrifugal pump with an impeller diameter of 0.2 m is designed to deliver a head of 10

m at a volumetric flow rate of 0.1 m3s-1 when it is rotating at 1500 rpm. It is desirable to
operate this pump at 1750 rpm, to deliver the same head at the same efficiency. For this
reason, the diameter of the impeller is changed without disturbing the geometric similitude.
Neglecting the Reynolds number effects, determine
a) the diameter of the modified impeller,
b) the volumetric flow rate of the pump with the modified impeller.
