Lesson Plan for S7ES-IVf-7

Objective:

Account for the occurrence of land and sea breezes, monsoons, and the
intertropical convergence zone. Describe the effects of certain weather
systems in the Philippines.

Code:

S7ES-IVf-7

Grade Level:

Subject:

Earth Science

(1) Review

Begin the lesson with a quick review of previous topics related to weather
systems. Ask the students:

What are the different types of weather phenomena you know?

Can anyone explain what a breeze is?

(2) Motivation

Show a short video clip (2-3 minutes) illustrating the differences between
land breezes and sea breezes, along with visuals of monsoons and the
intertropical convergence zone. Ask students to share their thoughts on how
these phenomena might affect their daily lives.
(3) Activity

Interactive Workshop: Weather System Simulation

Materials Needed:

Large flat container or tray

Water

Small fan (to represent wind)

Ice cubes

Thermometer

Colored paper or markers

Chart paper

Instructions:

Setup:

Fill the tray with water to represent the sea.

On one side of the tray, place ice cubes to simulate the cooler land.

Use the small fan to create wind across the tray.

Observation:

Have students observe how the wind affects the water and the temperature
changes.

Allow them to measure the temperature of the water near the ice cubes and
the opposite end of the tray.

Discussion:
Ask students to note the differences in temperature and air movement.

Discuss how these observations relate to land and sea breezes.

Create a Weather Chart:

In groups, students will create a weather chart on chart paper that details
the characteristics of land breezes, sea breezes, monsoons, and the
intertropical convergence zone.

(4) Analysis

Guide the students to analyze their observations. Discuss questions such as:

How does temperature influence wind direction?

What happens to the air pressure in the presence of warm and cold air?

(5) Abstraction

Summarize the concepts learned. Highlight the importance of understanding

these weather systems in the context of the Philippines, where monsoons
significantly impact agriculture and daily life.

(6) Application

Real-life Problem: Imagine you are a farmer in the Philippines. You need to
decide when to plant your crops based on the weather patterns influenced
by monsoons. How would you determine the best planting season? Discuss
the factors that you would consider.

(7) Assessment

Questions:

Multiple Choice: What causes land breezes?

a) Warm air rising

b) Cool air moving from land to sea (Correct Answer)

c) Sea currents

True/False: Monsoons only occur in the summer.

Answer: False

Fill-in-the-Blank: The area where the trade winds from the northern and
southern hemispheres meet is called the __________.

Answer: Intertropical Convergence Zone

Multiple Choice: Which of the following is a characteristic of sea breezes?

a) Occur during the night

b) Occur during the day (Correct Answer)

c) Are caused by high pressure over the sea

True/False: The intertropical convergence zone is static and does not change
position.

Answer: False

(8) Assignment

For homework, students will write a short essay (1-2 paragraphs) about a
specific weather phenomenon they experience in their locality. They should
describe its characteristics, effects, and any personal experiences related to
it.

Additional Questions and Answers

What is a land breeze?

A land breeze is a wind that blows from the land to the sea, usually occurring
at night when the land cools faster than the water.
How do monsoons affect the agriculture in the Philippines?

Monsoons bring heavy rainfall, which can be beneficial for crops, but
excessive rains can also lead to flooding and crop damage.

What is the role of the intertropical convergence zone in weather patterns?

It is an area where trade winds meet, causing cloud formation and

precipitation, significantly influencing tropical weather systems.

What is the difference between a sea breeze and a land breeze?

A sea breeze occurs during the day when cool air from the sea moves inland,
while a land breeze occurs at night when cool air from the land moves to the
sea.

What weather phenomenon is often associated with the ITCZ?

The ITCZ is often associated with heavy rainfall and thunderstorms.

Interactive Activities

Weather Map Creation:

Students will create a weather map indicating areas affected by land and sea
breezes, monsoons, and the ITCZ in the Philippines. They can use colors and
symbols to represent different weather conditions.

Role Play:

Divide students into small groups where each group represents a different
weather system (land breeze, sea breeze, monsoon, ITCZ). They will create a
short skit demonstrating their weather system's effects on the environment
and people.

Data Collection Project:

Students will collect data on local weather patterns over a week and analyze
how they correlate with the concepts learned about breezes and monsoons.
They will present their findings to the class.
